Re: Pipe #1
I wouldn't try to fix ALL of the mistakes. Leave the shape close to how it is - use it as a practice for finishing is what I would do. Go back and sand it more. The reason for that is, since you are so unexperienced - you can take it too far if you don't have a guideline...which you don't. This pipe...
Re: Pipe #1
Ocelot pretty much nailed it. It looks like there are still some scratches in the stem and on the bowl - I would spend more time sanding. I find that looking at the pipe under a bright light (a direct source, not overhead lighting - aka a lamp) helps show you the scratches. Overall, the stummel need...

DIY French Wheel
Any problems with making a french wheel out of wood and using a Home Depot buffing arbor to be mounted on a lathe?

Gotcha. Makes sense - thanks!
Re: Termites?
You nailed it on the head! That is exactly what they look like.
Thanks!
EDIT:
This also makes a TON of sense, since the last shipment of briar I received had some sort of mold-like thing on the surface.

Termites?
I was digging through my block box and on every single piece of bark there were several small white/translucent bugs that resemble tiny little termites. They didn't appear to be boring into the wood itself, just crawling on the bark. They were localized to the bark - I did not find them anywhere els...

I've had equally good luck with Online Metals and McMaster-Carr.

Re: Lathe Use Advice
After taking a few months off from the lathe and spending more time reading books, watching videos, and reading posts, I finally whipped the lathe back out. Everything is much better now - tearout is gone since I have learned to properly sharpen tools and control cut depth; roughing is easier with s...

Re: One Way to Make a Pipe
Where did you get those chuck jaws? They're Talon tower jaws that Nate King customized for me. It's a workable, cheaper alternative to an expensive chuck. It's not a permanent solution if you want to be serious at pipe making. I intend to have Trent Rudat make me a pipemaker's chuck but I'm waiting...
Re: Number 7.
I would look for sharper edges in a rhodesian like this. Gives it a cleaner look. Sharper edges (angle) from the two rings to the bottom? Thanks for the input. I was mainly referring the the edge between the top and side of the bowl. In the 5th picture you can see it looks like it got rounded over ...

Re: My first bamboo.
I would like it better if the bowl was a bit smaller and the stem didn't have that groove in it.
But I like it. The bamboo/shank joint looks great.

Re: Newbie pipe maker. Here's a few of my first attempts.
For some reason I was under the impression that the rod stock was all square and had to be turned round on a lathe. Looked at it on PME and saw the round acrylic. I'll have to order some of that one of these days. Just wonder how much I'll waste before a decent stem is produced. Maybe I need to ord...

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade
I've never made a cavalier before. I know there are explanations around, but won't somebody be a nice chap and post some schematics and explanations so we can meet the expectations? I don't want to experiment too much with this one, given that there are some top-notch players for this year's trade....
