One Way to Make a Pipe

Here's a photo essay I've put together on my website on the making of a pipe I started back in September if anyone is interested. It's not real detailed but there are a few good tidbits in there as well as some ideas one could possibly take from the photos of how I do things.

Same here, it states I don't have permission to view drafts. My guess is you've either not published your post yet on the wordpress blog, or you've given us the link to the draft instead of the published article...

Love the pipe and LOVE the little white and black dots on the bottom of the shank and stem. For a second, I thought my eyes were playing a trick on me. "Is that a reflection in the stem? Wait, there's a dot on the ivory cap. Wait, they're different colors. *sees the next photo* OMG THAT'S AWESOME."

Thanks. I can't remember for sure but I think it was Woodcraft.

They're Talon tower jaws that Nate King customized for me. It's a workable, cheaper alternative to an expensive chuck. It's not a permanent solution if you want to be serious at pipe making. I intend to have Trent Rudat make me a pipemaker's chuck but I'm waiting to get a metal lathe first. This chuck works well in the meantime. The one thing I dislike about it the most is that the jaws are concave. It makes it tough when there's not a lot of briar to grab ahold of. I've learned ways to work around it but it takes more time than it should.

Edit: This is a design I came up with and the intent of all the set screws is to be able to tilt the block in the jaws so I don't have to square blocks for better grain alignment.

Cory,

I have some similar to Wayne's and experienced some of the same problems he mentioned. I recommend you talk to Steve (smokindawg) here on the forum, as he makes a really reasonably priced set of jaws that don't have the same drawbacks as the tower jaws, and they open wider than the chuck will allow with standard jaws. That was a big sell for me, as I ended up with some blocks that I couldn't fit into the chuck with the tower jaws.

Yea, I have trouble with the 1/2" concave non-serrated jaws that came with my Nova Midi chuck. I still have yet to turn anything other than small ebauchons. Not comfortable putting a plateaux up there. I actually had an incident when chucking up a medium sized ebauchon that had a corner "missing" (one corner was bark/plateaux). I only had three contact points in the 1/2" jaws - I lost the block when I had a catch. That was also partly due to dull tools though. I blame inexperience and the jaws.

Anyway, thanks. I'll be looking into smokingdawg's jaws. They look like the best economical solution.
