HI, This is a nice piece of wood and the stain looks good too. Overall, the stummel looks pretty nice, though a bit unbalanced by the lack of side flair mentioned above. The shank addition and stem seem over large to me - a " tail wagging the dog" effect, as it were. Too me, the pipe would...

John,

I thought that was what you made your stems on.

Stephen,
Using a drill bit that way is a great idea. Obviously, you are more careful/skilled than I!
See you in Chicago.

Scott, My heart goes out to you. I,too, have sanded thru several stems in the past and it is ALWAYS after the shank/stem dimensions are set. I have given up on trying to use a 1" belt for fine stem work. It's just too easy to have the edge dig in and ruin your work. I have resigned mysel...

HI Tech, Very nice second effort. I would stain it anyway for the experience. Stain will show all those little sanding marks so beware. You might want to finish the sanding and polishing of the stem to get a feel for what it takes to get a mirror finish. You can put a hand drill in a vise and put bu...

Ben, That is a really sleek looking pipe. I agree with Ray, it is sexy and that is rare in a Bulldog. I would echo Jeff's comments too, about the planes and rustication. I like the flare on the shank, though. Stem placement is too bad. I know what that feels like. All in all - very, very nice. Congra...

You probably already know this, but it bears mentioning. You want to "reserve" particular pipes for aromatics and smoke only those type blends in them. Likewise, English blends in pipes dedicated to only English mixtures. This eliminates the difficulties that arise from the "cross con...

Hey Tano,

Thanx for posting the link.
Are you happy w/this wood?
I see you must order a pretty good size piece.
May I ask how much you bought and what the final costs were?
Oh, and how long it took to get it?

Many thanx,

Hi,
I like the stummel, grain, shape is nice.
The stem doesn't seem to work very well for me - a bit too heavy visually
and a bit too busy shape wise. Just my opinion.
Overall pretty nice.
Thanx for posting it.

Hi,
I would use Feibings black oil stain to get a black black.
After about 10 min. wipe off the excess that didn't soak in w/a lint free cloth or paper towel.
Then a very (very) light coat of shellac.
That should do it.

Hi Heinz,
Very nice and graceful. Clean design and a fantastic piece of wood.
The shape takes good advantage of the grain pattern.
Staining seems to enhance the grain nicely.
I like this one a lot. My compliments.

Hi,
I have two bits from him that I've been using for a while and they still cut clean and smooth holes.
BTW - Trent is a real nice guy too.

Hi,
I think the general design and execution of the stem work well. I would have made the stem a bit thinner where it is thickest. Visually, that section seems to need a bit more material removed, but otherwise, I like the stem and the pipe as a whole. Nice work. :D

Tano,
Very nice looking pipe.
I like your choice of material for the stem adornment.
In a post above you mention sandpaper string. I am unfamiliar with it.
What is it and where do you get it please?
Thanx much,

Hi Jeff,
These are two real beauties. Very nice balance to the shapes and stems together.
And speaking of stems, your stems have gotten really extra fine.
My hat's off to you buddy :)
