My fourth effort (and the last prebored block ever to cross my bench). Comments are welcome. http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l19/Fred_S/Pipes/004/004A.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l19/Fred_S/Pipes/004/004B.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l19/Fred_S/Pipes/004/004C.jpg http://i92.phot...

As often happens, my life seems to have multiple threads going at once, which, up close, appear to be unrelated. But when have the time to puff on a pipe and putter around in the shop with nothing particular on my mind, I’m suddenly struck by similarities. Case in point: Last night I was reading a b...

Holy crap Kim! It's amazing the way you were able to perfectly reveal that ¾” stripe of birdseye down the center and of this pipe.

I wish someone would have advised grabbing a bowl of popcorn and settling in for the evening early in this thread. It's certainly entertaining. :fencing:

Try spreading 3 or 4 pinches out on a napkin for an hour or two, then have a go at it. If it's a "wet" tobacco issue, it'll dry pretty fast this time of year.

Tapered Drill Bit?

With only 5 pipes under my belt, I'm still committed to using molded stems because I want to concentrate most of my efforts on the tools & techniques for shaping the briar. That said, I plan to re-work the stems for a better draw using a 5/32" (4mm) drill bit. My question is about tapered b...

It just so happens that as I was surfing pipe makers sights last night (that seems to occupy a lot of non-shop time lately) and I found Brian Ruthenbergs site with some pictures of him using a ShopSmith. I don't know what processes he uses it for (the pictures show some drilling operations), but he ...

Have a look at BD-47, my second pipe (finished on my 47th birthday). Finished from a Pimo kit. This pipe turned out exactly how I envisioned it prior to the first cut and I couldn't be more satisfied with it. I'm really enjoying this pipe making stuff and have decided to get serious with it. Since f...

Thanks Wayne. It's made from a POS cheap kit I picked up a while ago. It was labeled as Italian Briar and it seems to act the same way as the other blocks I've been whittling on so I assume that it is indeed briar. The stem was HUGE before I reworked it. Unfortunatly, I worked it too much and it's n...

Introducing Adam. My first pipe. Finished a few weeks ago. A few flaws, but he smokes great. http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l19/Fred_S/Pipes/100_2147.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l19/Fred_S/Pipes/100_2153.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l19/Fred_S/Pipes/100_2154.jpg http://i92.phot...

I think you mean hygroscopic (or even hydroscopic). BTW - Acrylics, nylons & many other plastics are also hygroscopic.

I'd buy a couple of these made for a 1/2" motor arbor. I have some of the DA pads and can't find a good way to mount them to my motors - your arbor is just the ticket.
