Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade
im not part of the PITH this year but will be all it over next time round if you guys dont mind. just wanted to comment on rev's "scotties baby/blovalier". that is like the willy wonka of cool pipes. definitly has a wallenstein look but maybe thats just all the crazy happening. it definite...
Re: The cutty
thanks you chris i respect your input as u make a damn fine cutty.
Re: "E" pipes
This is the first I've heard of an E-pipe, and after poking around google a bit, I don't like it. I don't like it at all. What's the point? You want to smoke a pipe without smoking a pipe? Nonsense! Rubbish! This E-Pipe is no pipe at all! It's just something that looks like a pipe but does somethin...
Re: The cutty
I don't think the top has much bearing on whether or not it is a cutty. The foot is rather traditional, but was used to strengthen a clay heel, which isn't necessary for briar. I cut them a few different ways, seems like a personal pref thing. when i said rounded i was being vague i meant tapered. ...

Re: The cutty
FWIW i agree with sas about the egg on the branch. i look at a nice rounded top and bottom of the bowl for a balanced cutty. i actually like both styles of bowl orientation, perpendicular to the bowl and parallel to the shank. im currently working on one that has a great egg shape and is perpendiclu...

Re: finished these two
the shank accent on the first looks extremly bent like at an awkward drastic angle and im not a fan of the plateau freehand rhodesian thing. the blasts are very nice and the stain is great. stem work is nice but has a another very drastic bend in the first one. the accent on the first one has a ton ...

Re: briar burl
the burl you got Im guessing was already dry( several years old or more perhaps) Burls are cut green then boiled and dried. When the burl is leftto dry by itself it cracks. Boiling a dreid burl is a waste of time. Unless I got this all wrong with the kind of burl you got. you know i think your righ...

Re: why boxwood???
wayne, when you stabilized your holly, did it go yellow or did it go yellow slowly after many smokes. It turns ivory in color when stabilized with CA glue. That's the only method I've tried. i have some liquid wood stabilizer that i used for the holly. i vacuum the stabilizer into the wood and it h...
