Customer wanted a freehand pickaxe with plateau showing, so here it is. My first pickaxe, and it was NOT easy. I had to make some custom 7 ply flannel buffs to get into that area between the shank and the bowl. Comments and suggestions welcome.

Somebody used a nording as inspiration .. I like yours much better
The airway looks like it's riding a little high in the shank though
Congrats

Re: Freehand Pickaxe
Guilty as charged. I actually referenced as many reverse curved(not sure what else to call it) pickaxes as possible. It took a lot of prep work laying it out and a lot of time on the sanding wheel. Took a lot of breaks between cuts to see where to cut next. This was my first freehand being shaped on the sanding wheel, so it was very nerve wracking as the customer was very specific in what he wanted. If I do another one of these, it'll be too soon! Agreed on the airway thing and thanks for the vote of confidence. I really do like Nording's overall style, but it is apparent in the stuff that comes out of his shop that he is a large scale producer. That being said, I own 3 Nordings and I love them all.(With improved airways of course )jogilli wrote:Somebody used a nording as inspiration .. I like yours much better
