Ok, guys and gals, here is a lovat that I just finished. It's a wee pipe and light too. Weighs about .7 oz.

I'm pretty pleased with this one except for a few details, but I'm sure you guys will pick up on stuff I missed. (FYI I forgot to sand out the chamber before taking photos, sorry Wayne. That has been fixed)

Because of the long shank, the shank looks a bit thick towards the bowl in proportion to the bowl size. I like a bit steeper of a saddle but that's probably more personal preference. The only other glaring thing I see is that you need to sand out your tobacco chamber.

I tend to agree with you. I was a little nervous about taking any more off the bottom of the shank, but it would probably benefit the shape. I don't think I've ever been accused of taking off too much material.

That's A pretty nice pipe Jesse! I thought the same thing, that the shank was too thick for the bowl, but looking at it again i see the taper is what was throwing it off. Maybe a little too pronounced.

Same shank thickness. less taper. poor photoshop.

I don't know Joe. I think that makes the shank look too thick. I like this one better. I actually didn't take any off the bottom, just a minute portion from the top of the shank.

you are right. that does work better with the slender bowl.

I think I would have left the shank/bowl transition a little softer. Almost looks like you were cutting in there with a file. That's a preference issue though.

Andrew, that is probably the area I struggle with the most in my composition. I know that a transition can be too sharp and I haven't really found the right touch yet. Any suggestions?

wrapping some sandpaper around a cushioned backing helps to soften the transitions. I use 3/4" wide sandpaper that is velcro backed. sticking it to some velcro and wrapping it around a round file works for me.

I use a few different round files. For sanding I use foam that can be shaped to whatever radius.

Where do you get your foam? Is it one of those nail boards?

Nice work, Jesse. It was the proportion of the shank/bowl (IMO) that was off, of course. Would have worked equally well with just a bigger bowl.

Nice (opinion) articulation, too. Having that look (to some) too abrupt is a nice problem to have.

You can buy foam at a craft store. Just make sure it's closed cell. You can also buy a foam set at woodcraft. It's helpful. Just shape the foam on your sanding disk.
