1 Ounce Dublin

Post by DMI »

I love making small pipes, although I'm thinking of refinishing this on to lose the glue band.

Length 14.5 cm 5 11/16"
Height 4.7cm 1 13/16
Chamber 2x4cm 3/4x1 9/16
Shank Diameter 12mm 7/16

Very nice!
I really like the long shank and its line, though I think it could be improved a little bit - the shank band (nice, is that horn or horn-colored acrylic?) seems to be turned straight/cylindrical, making the shank curve interrupted at the band. I think if you just turned the initial part, and then hand shaped the rest into a smooth curve just like the rest of the shank, then the whole would be super nice :)

Looks nice except the line of the shank really bothers my eyes. It's very pretty until it hits that kink in the middle.

I agree, it looks great except for the line on the shank- I think it needs to be a continued curve for this to work. Also, look closely at the base of the bowl at the shank junction- I think there is something amiss with the curve there.

I hate to say this, but bamboo is the answer.

The bend in the shank does mess with the flow. I'd probably soften the transition from shank to bowl a tad.

I like the horn accent (if it's not horn, well I like it anyway).

And there's me thinking this was near to perfect :D

Looking at the pipe in hand I think the problem is the ends of the shank, it straightens slightly at the bowl and mortice and with the straight extension kinda looses it. There is not a lot of wood left to play with, roughly 3mm, so no alterations are possible.

I call it a Dublin because of the chamber shape, it is possible to make the same shape bowl with a billiard chamber.

If the answer is bamboo what was the question?
