Finished My Halloween Pipe (I'm Terrible with Deadlines....)

Post by Alden »

I started this pipe before Halloween, finally got around to finishing it.....I didnt really want to, mainly because its terrible. But I figured I need to finish it since finding a raw block of meerschaum to work with is such a rare opportunity. I would have felt bad if I completely wasted it.
It was cooler before I whittled it away to nothing, and waaaay cooler before his bottom jaw fell off...
Technically, every aspect of it is completely wrong. Its an awful, awful pipe.
As a pipe in general, I give it a D. Everything about it is wrong, but it somehow smokes quite well.
In construction, I give it an F. The stem is so thin it could break. The walls of the bowl are so thin, I'm certain they would crumble with heavy use. The tenon from the bamboo stem to the bowl is just made out of bamboo. When you smoke it, the bamboo heats up, contracts, and the bowl falls off . :D
In Finish work, I give it a C. The finish is one thing that makes the pipe, but it needs to come way up in terms of quality.

Its like a really bad B movie thats awful, but somehow still works. All I really wanted to do was make something horrible to smoke at Halloween, and on that count alone it works :D
So, here it is in all its awfulness (even the pics are awful).... I call it "Malice Aforethought".

I should add, this is technically my "first pipe".
Also should say, I finally have power in my shop, and I'm turning on my Lathe for the first time tomorrow ! :endofmankind:
Hope to post some pics of a real pipe soon ! (insert happy dance here)

Heres how it looked when I first started (before I broke off the jaw and the ridges around the eyes!)

Hey man, I think that makes for an awesome Halloween-pipe! A bit ruff and scary and the same time=)
Just a pity that you broke the jaw, the skull you had was really nicely done!

Man, if you tie dyed that bamboo, it would look like Weaver/Downie collaboration. That in and of itself is terrifying.

Thanks guys ! It looks a little better in person.
I'm bringing it to Chicago because its the only thing I've finished so far.
Turned my lathe on for the first time today and started a Cutty and a Pot that I'm going to try to finish also.
