Tokutomi-Bo Nordh-Dublin Canadians Detail - Stem-Shank Faces
These are details from the following two pipes:
1. BO NORDH: Dublin-Canadian (1983)
(lightly smoked, tweaked and polished by Teddy) (on the left)
2. TOKUTOMI: Tribute to Bo Nordh
(Hiro grade, BN briar, 2008) (unsmoked) (on the right)
In a previous gallery post of one of my pipes, in Todd Johnson's critique he said that he saw tool marks on the face of the stem, and I said, yes, I turn and face the pipe shank and the stem face perfectly flat and perpendicular on the lathe and then only lightly and briefly sand them 400 grit (and then on up) so that I get a perfect fit with no light cracks when the pipe is assembled.
Note the tool marks on the stem and shank faces on both the Tokutomi and the Bo Nordh pipes, above.

Wow! I just realized MM makes pipes as well (if not better than) Bo Nordh and Tokutomi! Who knew?

Hmmm...
I can't tell in the pics, but that could be from twisting the bit into place. I have made several where I highly polished the face of the stem, but just in removing it a few times it left minute scratches. Doesn't take much to mar a finely polished surface with that much friction/contact. Again, not sure you can tell from the pic.

I'm gonna work a little syllogism here, follow along if you can kids.
Premise:
This Bo Nordh pipe has scratches.
Premise:
My pipe has scratches.
Conclusion:
My pipe is Bo Nordh-esque.
Rendered as starkly as this, it is fairly compelling.
Mike, even attempting the enemies-by-proxy route to fame in the pipe world is failing you. What a twat you are.
I can't tell if the point is that Bo wasn't as good as Todd or if Mike is as good as Bo? Anyone clear this up for me???

I'm not sure what the point is. I don't worry about fuckin' tool marks on the face of my fuckin' stem.
It apparently bothers Mike though, 'cause he's gotta show us, "Those guys do it too!"
Mike, I think Todd pushed one of your buttons.

Rad, don't be ridiculous. We all know that Mike doesn't have buttons to push - he's as laid back as they come; totally passive; completely apathetic; wholly docile; entirely acquiescent, compliant, and phlegmatic.RadDavis wrote:

Mike: I just looked at your website. I'm very curious how you arrived at your prices. Have you been able to sell many pipes for $6500.00? Thanks for your reply, Scot.
Re: Tokutomi-Bo Nordh-Dublin Canadians Detail - Stem-Shank Faces
Thats cos all your pipe have one massive "TOOL" mark on them, I believe its spelt "RAD"
Do you see what I did there.... It's like I am saying Rad is a Tool... you know using alternate meanings of the word tool to make a make a joke.....do you see it?

Here in defense of Mike, I'll chime in regarding this subject.
We keep our tools very sharp, it's really nice to have the face nice and smooth. Yes, we lightly sand and then hit them with compound to give them a nice sheen and this process also makes the epoxy removal easy as pie.
Regarding the marks, yes they could have been from removing the stems. Personally I think this just shows that there is no perfect pipe, with the exception of Rod and eRemarkable.

Actually, I guess that wasn't really so much "in defense" as "in offense" but little confusions like that are what make the world go round.

Re: Tokutomi-Bo Nordh-Dublin Canadians Detail - Stem-Shank Faces
For what it's worth, I don't use sandpaper on a stem face. I sharpen the tool fresh, and put a radius on the tip. I don't use carbide inserts any more for this, even when they're brand new the radius is too small. Very light final cut, very slow feed. This minimizes tool marks, but the machined surface is a flat as it's ever going to be. If guy isn't going to buy one of my pipes because he can't see his reflection in the stem face he could just as easily find fifty other reasons not to buy it.
As a point of order, although I admit I've lost my temper and done it myself, I don't think it's necessary to call each other names. Except for Rad and Ernie. Open season on those ************s.

I'm pretty sure the deep, concentric scratches like the ones in these photos are lathe tool marks.e Markle wrote:Hmmm...

Na, no buttons, no whatever?, it's just about tech methods of Shank-Stem face fitting, with a couple of master carver examples and detail photos you don't see very often.Sasquatch wrote: ...Mike, even attempting the enemies-by-proxy route to fame in the pipe world is...
One other thing I have done to fine tune a fit (courtesy of Sasquatch) is cut a hole in a piece of sandpaper (220 or 400) to fit over the stem tenon. Then put the pipe together and turn the stem to adjust-sand the shank face.
The objective is a perfect Stem-Shank fit at the faces with no light cracks.

Absolutely! I strive to engender frustration and kindle wrath in those around me. Therefore calling me names is a very natural response.

Re: Tokutomi-Bo Nordh-Dublin Canadians Detail - Stem-Shank Faces
Can we get back to the part where MM said a bad word directed at me? I haven't been able to work in the shop at all since that happened, I've been in so much emotional pain.
I would also like to state, for the record, that i enjoyed Chris's pun.
I would also like to state, for the record, that my stem faces shine like a naked baby's ass covered in baby oil.
I would also like to state, for the record, that this Bo Nordh guy makes shitty pipes. He should branch out and try something new.
