A&M Steel Stamps News?

Post by JHowell »

Anybody talked to Paul Argendorf recently? I've been trying to contact him for a couple of weeks with no success. I heard that he's had some health issues but understood that he was back in the shop. He's normally very prompt about returning messages, so I'm a bit worried.

Someone else just posted that they were unsuccessfully trying to contact him.

Hope all is well.

I know that the folks on the Christian Pipe Smokers Forum had been trying to get some work done from him as well for their POY, and struggling to hear back from him. I think he is MIA. :(

All right, then, gents, we need to train someone. I'll happily support Paul if he gets back online, but I need a stamp now. I've emailed Buckeye Engraving in Kent, OH, who seemed like a likely candidate but haven't heard back. There's a company in Pittsburgh that does this sort of thing but they have a $150 setup charge. We want more of a family business and less of a corporation.

Anybody have any sources to share? If a shop can see the benefits of dealing with a particular market we'll all get a better product.

I don't know about a stamp for pipes, but Harper makes a really nice leather stamp. Their prices are on the high side but they are also high quality. It might be worth talking to them.

A&M Steel Stamps News?

Post by mredmond »

Any information, from Paul or other sources is very much appreciated. It seems my timing is bad, as I was planning to contact Paul this week to get my first stamp made. I haven't met Paul, but I hope he is doing better as it seems he's been good to our craft.

I just ordered a stamp from Harper. Of the five shops I emailed, they were one of two that responded promptly, and the only one that could open my eps file. The price was reasonable. I'll post how the stamp turns out.

I have been considering changing from pantographs to stamps, good job I wasn't quite ready it seems. I will watch this thread with interest, I also might send out a few emails to some UK based stamp makers.

$150? I paid $130, and was originally quoted $180.

Depending on the stamp, I'd agree - $150 for the types of stamps we need on short notice is very reasonable.

It all depends on what your stamp says. :P

Yeah, $150 for "USA" would be a little steep. :D

I was thinking "Crafted with PRIDE in the Great White North by pipemeister extraordinare Todd Bannard, for your smoking pleasure" with a shark fighting a bear underneath.

That's wicked, huh?

FWIW, I had a stamp made by Rio Grande about 15 years ago and am still using it. They do a good job, if you're in a tight spot and need something quick.

Any idea if you can upload an image to them that they can reproduce? I'd really like to have more of a logo/graphic.

That was what I did when I got my stamp made way back when. Think I sent them an EPS file. Just write to them and get a quote, they'll tell you what they can and can't do, assuming no one is able to get hold of Paul in the meantime.

Got the name wrong on my last post, I'm dealing with www.steelstampsinc.com. I emailed them an eps file, no worries. Stamp is $150, turnaround is two weeks, which is a little long but having gotten to this point I decided to go ahead.

Just got an email from Paul saying he's been sick for two weeks but is back in the shop now. Too late for this stamp for me, but good news for those of you waiting for existing orders.
