Google Analytics

Post by RadDavis »

Are any of you guys with web sites using Google Analytics?

It's free, and all you need is a Gmail account. It tracks visits to your web site by country, city, etc, tells you how long the average stay was from each place, how many visitors are new and how many are returning, and a whole buch of other really cool stuff. I've had people from India visit my site! :D

I've had 3,282 visits from 40 countries/territories since Feb 4., and they stayed an average of 14 minutes, 9 seconds. This is so cool!

I'm not sure how to set it up, because it was done for me by my son, but it's definitely worth a look.

Yea, who wants to bet that Rad's VCR is probably still blinking 12:00?

Hehehe!

Sounds really cool Rad! I don't have a website, so I'm not using it. Still, how cool!

One of the benefits of having my own colocated server is being able to run AWStats on it. I like the detail available in Google Analytics, but I'd rather keep the all the traffic stats private - and I don't need to edit my code in order to support it.

I used to use Webalizer, but that hasn't been under development for some time. It's good, but stale.

I've got some stats like that via the free counter widget I use on my pipe blog. It tells people's country, what page they came from, where they went to, etc. Pretty interesting to read, especially the global map with dots all over it. It's quite freaky to think that my pipe blog is averaging 101 reads per DAY...

I'd heard about it but had not done it, until now! Thanks Rad, looking forward to seeing some stats after it's been up for a while.

Essentially all you need to do is sign up, then copy and paste the code they generate for you into each page on your website. In my case, I simply added it to the template, which builds each page of the site on the fly...

Great tip!

I use AWstats as well... sounds like it displays all the same info as the google one, plus it has the benefit of being private like Kurt said. My stats are not quite so impressive... 625 visitors for me since Feb 1 (not counting bot visits).
