Meer liners
Meer liners
Thoughts on meer bowl liners? I have been offered some and I would like to give them a try but not sure how exactly I would go about fitting them, are they glued in etc?

Re: Meer liners
They used to be seen occasionally in repair work (presumably to stop burn-outs in progress), and several lines of low-end American brands tried to "feature" them, then they sorta just went away.
A guy like you using them might cause a bit of cognitive dissonance in the collector world because of the repair + cheap connection.
Never owned one, so I have no idea how they'd smoke (fine, i imagine); and never installed one, so am not sure how they are held in place.

Good point George. Maybe I'll see if I can convert them into calabash bowl by adding a cap.

Re: Meer liners
They smoked o.k. nothing special, were big in the navy for a while. They were glued in around the top only. in the 60s.
Re: Meer liners
hmmm I always thought the meer liner was so that a person could enjoy the beauty and durability of the briar, but with out the ghosting due to the meer liner
Re: Meer liners
Check with Dru from DeadGuy pipes Chris. I got liners from him and he does a ton of work with them.

He only has a limited number from a new-old-stock find, and decided to stop selling what he has left after learning how rare they are.Nate wrote:Check with Dru from DeadGuy pipes Chris. I got liners from him and he does a ton of work with them.

Re: Meer liners
The people that now own Hilson have released a load of Mershaum lined bowls to pipes and cigars. Retail 116 dollars. according to them, they have been aging for about thirty years.
Re: Meer liners
I know, it sounded like Chris already had some and was asking about how to secure them. Dru would be able to help. Maybe I read it wrong LL.LatakiaLover wrote:He only has a limited number from a new-old-stock find, and decided to stop selling what he has left after learning how rare they are.Nate wrote:Check with Dru from DeadGuy pipes Chris. Re: Meer liners
Have only owned one. It was by no means an expensive pipe. After about twenty bowls or so the liner began to creep up from the briar bowl until there was a good 1/4 inch sticking up. Never bought another. It smoked okay, but didn't wow me in any way.caskwith wrote:Thoughts on meer bowl liners? Re: Meer liners
Every now and then some factory turned stummels from the 50's turn up on e-bay, that was used for meer liners.
These have very thin walls, basically useless without the meer bits.

Re: Meer liners
Well I am abondining this idea. My sample arrived and it's really not suitable I don't think. I'll probably use it to line a pipe that has a flaw and make a smokable shop pipe.
Re: Meer liners
I have a few Citation pipes and they are all meer lined. I have always really liked them...enough to search for and buy others. As with any meer they don't hold the flavors of previous tobacco like briar. Just my two cents.

Re: Meer liners
I have a few meer liners and thought about using them but also have a couple meer lined pipes both of which are cracked. Think I will just keep the liners as a curiosity of days gone by.
