Installing Stem?
New to the entire pipe making community. Have completely 2 pipes thus far. First was of pine just to attempt. My second was done out of briar. Both completely by hand. However now that I'm really interested in this skill I'm curious about installing a stem. Is it pressed in with drill press? Or wood glued or what? If some on could help with a little bit of info would be Mich appreciated.

Re: Installing Stem?
A tenon is turned, or installed on the stem, and a mortise is drilled in the shank. I recommend getting a few predrilled kits to start out first. It will help you focus on shaping before having to deal with other aspects of pipe making.
Re: Installing Stem?
do you own a pipe?
look for some videos on youtube, it will help you understand better, having the visual and all, plus if you use the search feature on this forum you will find a lot of info about the subject, but I think you tube maybe your best bet

At the top right of the page, you'll see a little icon saying "Search". It is a remarkable tool, just ask Ernie.

The stem goes into the smaller of those two holes.

Re: Installing Stem?
Lance,
I'm guessing you are not a pipe smoker, or you are a great pipe maker and are messing with everyone. The mortise and tenon should be able to snugly slide together. The tenon should fit all the way to the bottom of the mortise. The smoke holes (spelled hole) should line up exactly on either side. The joint between the shank(wood) and stem(lucite) should both be faced flat as to not cause any weird gaps. I'm sure anyone who sold you a predrilled has done all of that already. So, decide on your shape and carve it out. When you get to shaping the shank, slide the stem in and shape them together so the joint is the same on both sides. If using power tools you are unfamiliar with carefully read the safety instructions, none of us need less fingers.

Walt,
That was very kind of you, however I'm not certain if this guy is messing with the forum..................or lacks any degree of common sense.
It's like having a new Mike Messer messing with all!

Re: Installing Stem?
Lacks any degree of common sense??? I simply asked a question. If you read all my posts I started by saying I am self taught. I am extremely knew to the pipe carving community. An no I have never owed a pipe. Its just something I decided to try one nite while messing around In garage. Now that ot caught my interest I have plenty of questions. Forgive me for my lack of knowledge on the subject.

Re: Installing Stem?
Lol you checked my facebook? All the cuts were from whittling... I guess I should start over an maybe explain a little bout myself. I'm a United States Marine Corps veteran. Honorable discharge in 2012. To help cope woth my ptsd I decided to pick up a hobby. That hobby being woodworking consodering I loved to create things out of wood as a kid. One thing lead to another. One cut lead to another cut an now I'm almost addicted to pipe making. Its a great hobby. Has caught a huge interest from me looking forward to creating more pipes an seeing how they come out.

Well lance, I think it's great that you're trying out something totally new. I'm not good at any of this. Thanks for letting is rib you a little.
Thank you for serving our country and my family. I've got a very close buddy who is visibly suffering from PTSD. He won't seek help from anyone other than jack Daniels. Afraid of it affecting his record.
