Stummel Templates
Howdy gents,
I have been gathering tools and supplies over the last couple of weeks, preparing to begin making pipes. Since I'm just beginning, I wondered if anyone knows of a source for templates or schematics for various pipe styles, sizes, etc... Something i could use to trace on to the wood and/or something that might give me precise or at least approximate dimensions. Just to help me get my feet wet.
Does anyone know of a website or book with something like that? Or does anyone have such templates/schematics they might be willing to share with a beginning pipe maker such as myself?
Thanks and happy puffing! Slainte!

If you have a printer, you can crop and enlarge the photos from a pipe shape chart. Or, you can download profile shots from Smokingpipes.com then resize and print them then cut them out. If you want something more durable and reusable, you can print out the photo then trace it onto blank transparent stencil sheets and cut them out. Mark your center points for the top of the bowl and bottom of the bowl for your tobacco chamber and the same for your airway so you can transfer the points and connect the dots on the block.

Brass would certainly be overkill not to mention expensive. I have found thin card to be very sturdy if looked after and if I really wanted a permanent template then I would use Perspex or some other thin plastic.

Re: Stummel Templates
I print my templates out on card stock and use those for templates. This works quite well for me, and they can be cut out with a pair of scissors.

Do you realize this is a pipemaking forum? Thick paper / cardboard works great.Yak wrote:FWIW : For your application, this may be overkill. But depending on how precise you want your pattern to be, if you're making one you expect to be using a lot, you might want want to make a sturdier one of thin sheet brass. De-grease it with acetone if need be, and paint it with a solution of 50% Dykem Layout Blue & 50% acetone. (It's too concentrated out of the can, and will tend to chip if you don't). Trace your pattern with the tip of a sharp pocket knife (easier to keep flowing lines flowing with than it is with a needle scribe), with the axis of the blade following the curvature of your item. When that's done, you've got a bright, precise outline that's easy to see against a blue background. Cut it out with a jeweler's saw along the outside of your pattern & do the final finishing with a #4 double cut file of your choice, keeping the finished edges at right angles to your stock.

Re: Stummel Templates
I like to draw things out in CAD software. I then print the shapes both on transparency film and paper. The transparency film lets me see the grain in the block in relation to the shape. Once the block is selected I attach the paper version to the side with spray adhesive and have at it. This or drawing directly on the side of the block works best in the drill first shape second mode.

If you ever do a club pipe or POY, a template is a good thing.

That's because you guys haven't made a pipe worth duplicating yet.andrew wrote:I'm with you CharlCharl wrote:You guys are boring! In 7 years I haven't done one single templet.
