it is a minor concern, you want to keep it away from children or pets. and try to keep it off your skin getting on your skin once in a while wont hurt you. now if your working it into the wood with your finger tips day after day i wouldn't be surprised if you had enlarged kidneys or liver. and what ever you do, don't try to distill the dye. LOL no really don't try it.Sasquatch wrote:I'm not concerned with the dye because basically all the toxicity data and the conclusions of the study presented show that the stuff is not very toxic.
I went and read it all, fully expecting that I was going to find out that the dye is mutagenic and causes brain damage. This is not the case.
Used with any care at all, this stuff presents no hazard.
I totally appreciate a guy coming in with actual information about what's in something like the Feibing's. But it seems to me Magicbilly is convinced that the stuff is going to kill someone and there's no evidence for that. It's not a sensitizer, not a mutagen, and the LD50 is off the charts. I'll bet raw corn has worse numbers.
Thanks for the data Magic - nice to see someone actually do some research rather than just theorizing. But in this case I think the data causes no concern.

Re: allow me to introduce myself
I make pipes the way I cook.....I get covered in shit no matter how hard I try to stay clean. I'm not too concerned about the effects that the dye I use is going to have on me....or the bun in the oven. I've got bigger things to worry about. If I wanted to freak out about something I come in contact with on a daily basis it would be dirt, not dye. My husband tracks it in, my kids play in it (and occasionally eat it).

Wow Sas, the years are treating you better than I thought they would .LatakiaLover wrote:Food for thought: Pipes have been around for several thousand years conceptually, and several hundred years in their more-or-less present form.
As recently as the mid-20th century, many companies made millions of pipes each year. The man-hours spent on them is then some multiplier of that.
I think it's safe to say that in the 21st century, original ideas about what to make, what materials work best, and how to go about doing it, are hard to come by.
In fact, the most surprising thing these days isn't even the pipes themselves, but that one of these critters can make 'em. (ever seen how big their hands are? )

I deal direct with Fiebing. Taste like shit, but does the job. People wouldn't know me without the stained fingers. I'm going to die right? Well I have lived a colorful life.
