Pipe making hobby
Pipe making hobby
Hello, I'll use this post as a kind of presentation. I'm Joan Cantó and I'm a commercial photographer from Catalonia (Spain). During the moving from my old studio to the new one that I bought there was some unuseful time without working. then I decided to try to make my own pipe from a predrilled kit. It was two months ago and after 6 pre drilled kits, I bought some wood and a drilling machine and started making the whole pipe myself. Now I'm totally addicted to this hobby and very happy with this learning process.
I'll be very happy if you can show me how would you improve anything because I'm like a a white blackboard. My tools are my hands and a drilling machine with some sandpaper discs, but being honest, the limits are not in the equipment yet, but in my lack of experience.
Hope you judge them as an honest exercise from somebody who is learning. I didn't sell any of them and I don't plan to do it in an immediate future. I just want to improve and have fun in the process.
These are the first pipes I did after the 6 kits. I did 2 more pipes after these ones, but I'll post them in another post.
7th pipe. Nosewarmer to celebrate the birth of my first son. Deer horn ring. Mouthpiece too narrow I see now.
8th pipe. Lovat with deer horn ring. Mouthpiece too narrow also.
9th pipe. Ball or tomato. Acrilic ring.
10th pipe. Horn. Rosewood ring.
Hope you like them and any comment or critique will be welcome!
PS: Sorry for my poor english.

Beautiful, and first ten? I'm also amazed.
Love the horn.

Re: Pipe making hobby
What a great start to pipe making. The horn is my favorite as well. I really like the lines.

"but rev, isn't smoking a sin?"
well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin
"but what would be smoking to excess?"
Why smoking two pipes at once of course

Really nice work for your first 10! My favorite is your bent ball. IMO, it's got the best balance and composition to my eye.
You can take more wood off of the shank/bowl junction from the top and both sides. All of your pipes are a little heavy there. On your next pipe, try imagining that the bowl and shank are two different pieces that you're attaching together. The bowl will round on all sides, and the shank will meet right in the middle.
Like this:
Please forgive the crude visualization.
There will always be a little rounding in these areas, but if you can define your bowl and shank more at that juncture, you'll improve the look of your pipes a lot. I highly recommend getting some needle files. Those will help a ton.
Again, great work for your first ten. Keep it up!

Re: Pipe making hobby
Thank you guys for your comments. I did two more pipes since then, with a 2 weeks stop in between (my first son born in that time ).
I didn't post the previous ones because I didn't drilled them (they were kits) and then i don't consider them MY pipes... I just did them more beautiful, but the pipe technically was already done.
I will post the next two this afternoon if I have some time. Should I post them here or in a different post?

Re: Pipe making hobby
I really appreciate your advice and the visualizations is totally clear. I agree with you at 100% but every pipe I do is an exercise for me and I try to to solve or improve some new things. In the next one I did after the ones showed here, I tried the kind of juncture you're talking about and it was not as difficult as I imagined (that's why I didn't tried it before) but it can be probably sharper in the future. Thank you very much for your advice. As I'm a beginner, I totally apreciate any advice also if it is very obvious. Twelve pipes done is not a great experience so also very obvious information is lacking in my knowledgeUberHuberMan wrote:Really nice work for your first 10! My favorite is your bent ball. PS: Sorry guys, I don't know you personally but, yes, you sound so melodramatic. I would pay for learning from any of you.
