How many pipes have you screwed up?

Post by bbeberle »

Well I got some more briar kits in since I don't have my lathe yet (that will be fixed tomorrow) and I decided to make another poker because I still haven't fixed the problems I was doing on the previous two. I also was going to make a volcano. The beginning stages of the volcano started well but I soon realized that this block was not NEAR big enough for this shape so I switched to a bent billiard. I already didn't have much meat to work with at the bottom of the bowl so I ended up sanding right into the bowl trying to shape it out. I felt like an idiot! Also my other poker isn't looking to great either. I was doing so well with my first two and now it seems like I've gone to the dogs lol.

On top of all that I went through two Ebonite hand-cut stems that Tyler made up for me. After that fiasco I decided to just buy a saddle from PE and fit it and move on. Well I didn't realize is that they sold them by the dozen so I ordered what I thought was one single and got 12 LOL.

So one briar block ruined, 11 more stems than I needed and 2 Ebonite stems destroyed later I am still 1 pipe finished and 1 half done haha. And I've had the flu all week. I have so much to learn...Lets hope December brings a more successful and enjoyable experience :) Anyone else have a humbling experience to share?

On a commission piece once I had all of the shaping done and was checking over the order to see what color finish the customer wanted when I realized that they wanted a Morta pipe instead of a Briar one. :banghead:

And by "scores", Ernie means "all."

I see my screw ups as actually being great for the economy! The more you screw up, the more you have to purchase. All good!

depends on what you mean by screwed up. If you mean how many have I destroyed and had to throw out? Then luckily none yet. If you mean how many have I don't poorly, all of them. I have however destroyed a number of stems, I hate stems so much.

well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin

"but what would be smoking to excess?"

Why smoking two pipes at once of course

You'll learn to love stems. That or you'll always hate half of your process.

I've totally wrecked about 6 stummels through sheer stupidity. And probably about the same number of stems.

Making mistakes that you can recover from is one thing, but totally botching something is another.

I rarely totally botch these days. The worst streak of luck I had was when I first began learning the shape-first method. Total shit-show.

I have no idea how many I've screwed up beyond recovery but I could make a decent sized pile with them. It's less these days than it used to be but I do still screw one up every now and then. Seems it mostly happens when I'm trying a really difficult shape to drill.

At least this many. I ruined a lot of briar (and rod stock) learning to use the lathe. Image
