Bent Brandy

Post by Alden »

This pipe I like. I like the proportions a lot, like the shape a lot, wish I could have gotten a better finish/stain.
360 degree straight grain.
Criticism appreciated.

God, that's a gorgeous pipe! I love brandy pipes, especially large ones. Beautifully finished, just beautiful.

This is also quite lovely. The only thing that I don't personally find attractive is the squished in sides. Otherwise, this pipe is sweeeeeeet.

Just noticed so I thought I'd ask: did you burn the wood a little on the sides of the shank where it meets the bowl?

The dark spots at the bowl/shank is stain I was too lazy to sand out. The details of shape on the entire pipe is for two reasons alone, following grain and trying to get rid of flaws.
This block had some beautiful tight grain but was lousy with tiny little pin prick voids. I never got rid of them no matter what I did. That straight grain ran tight all the way to the bottom of the block but I kept bringing the cheeks up higher and higher chasing flaws. In the end I had half as much straight grain and just as many flaws :banghead: But it does make for a pipe considerably lighter and more comfortable in the hand and the birdseye/flame grain is not too shabby.
