First Volcano

Post by bandkbrooks »

It's incomplete and I wanted to get some input before moving any further along. Please, any input or suggestions are welcome.

I'm definitely going to try a blast on this one.

Thank you for the help.

Certainly not one who has a great eye, but it seems to me that more beef should be taken off at the shank/bowl juncture. But I think the shape is great. Why blast? The grain looks nice from what I can see. Though I can see how the blast might contribute to the "volcano" feeling.

I've tried two volcanoes and neither came out looking like a volcano! Each time, some damn chasm opened up and as I don't have a sand blaster, had to alter shape to save the piece.

Ah well.

The blast would be because there is some really nice ring grain. Look at the 2nd photo in particular. There are some things I can see that need to be tweaked after looking at it in photos. In photo 2 the S curve along the bottom is a little wonky right at the shank.

I agree on the shank bowl junction too. I think I will go back and tweak it too. Thank you.

Looks good so far. I would try to raise the front end (not the stem side) up a bit, it looks like it's drooping down a bit to much now.

I agree with Massis. When I made my first volcano I had trouble keeping the back of the bowl (front for Tyler and crew) a nice curve fee from lumps. Yours looks pretty good right now, but pay close attention as you sand so you don't distort the shape.

I think this would be an awesome blasting candidate. I mean look at those growth rings!

Oh, and one final piece of advice. You might want to thin out the button just a hair.

Thank you. Yeah I would feel guilty if I didn't blast this one.

Regarding the button. I have a client that specializes in assassinations with a blow dart. I thought this would be perfect for him.

Lookin' good! Only thing that I'd recommend is bringing the bottom line at the front of the pipe up a bit so the lower line of the pipe creates a smile. :)

Also, your tools must be razor sharp to create a mirror finish like that. Nice! My tools currently leave a "surface of mars" look on my materials. :?

It's not really the tools s much as... What's the technical term...sand the shit out of it. Abranet sanding sheets are the way to go. They are great and last a lot longer than paper.

Are you sanding by hand with them? I have been thinking of getting some type of arboral sanding system going. These look great, but I'm afraid the mesh would really eat my hands up.

Only thing I see missing is the lava. Look forward to the finished product.

Thank you both. I've got one of those small foam backed disks you can throw in a Jacobs (spelling) chuck on my lathe. I sand with the "velcro" backed abranet mesh paper. I will then sand by hand using the same grit. It really shouldn't tear up your hands unless you are trying to exfoliate to the extreme.

Well then I will start doing my own pedicures  .

It looks intersting, might have to give it a try. As soon as I remember to get a damned chuck for my lathe, that is.

You would be able to buff your nails whey you buff and wax your pipe too.

I have a chuck similar to this:

http://www.woodcraft.com/product/200397 ... chuck.aspx

I got it at Woodcraft. I can use it in either side of my lathe.

That is the one I think I am going to get. Gonna make a run down there today, I think.

I do work in the shop in rubber garden shoes (really safe, I know), so it would totally be possible to throw a leg on the bench and get to buffin .

Yeah, I pretty much have the same and I use it to drill, then to sand.
