"Four Days Dead"...

Post by JMG »

This is my first plateau top. I'm happy to see some improvement in my work, but there are certainly things to be much improved on. I'm not happy with the bottom of the pipe/heel, as always my stem shank transition could be better, and now that I see the pictures I missed a lot of sanding marks on the stem. I'm also not super excited with how the bend in the stem came out, but it will do. Big thanks to Nate for all his help and advice (and the rest of you guys, too, ) As always, your critiques and advice would be much appreciated.

George,

I can't share your critics on this one. It' a very fine pipe - except that flaw on the front which is not your fault.
Cool shape - I got one of that kind made by Rainer Barbi. Can't see that your's is worse.

Cheerio!

I think it's awesome. Beautiful grain, and nice finish.

Wow, John! That's a very nice looking pipe and a huge leap in quality from even your last pipe which was pretty good. One question: is the shank perpendicular to the bowl or is there a slight bend? If it's perpendicular, the bowl should cant forward a few degrees so that it doesn't give the appearance that it is facing back at you while you puff. That's the only real thing I can see. Nice job man.

Hey man...thanks for comments (and everyone else as well.) It's not exactly perpendicular. I actually intended for this pipe to have quite a bit more angle to the shank as it does. I had it drawn out on the block with more angle, but apparently didn't drill it that way, unfortunately. I do see what you mean, though.

Great looking Dublin-Poker, I'm calling it ...nice form, color, finish, and the plateau angle worked just perfectly. Only criticism I have is a maybe...the plateau finish looks painted, or appears to have a thick coating on it? I'm not sure what I'm seeing there.

Thanks for the kind comments fellas. I really appreciate it.

@ Mike...I put a light coat of shellac on the plateau. I may have not thinned it out enough.

This is a beautiful shape and it looks like it would feel really nice in the hand. I really like the proportions on this. Great work!

Man that is terrible. Send it to me and I'll keep it from getting into the hands of anyone else. I will keep it secret; I will keep it safe.

Really nice.
