Second Effort, Horn

Post by Sawdust »

Hi All,
I've tried to incorporate what I learned with the first one but I think I am still getting the shank too narrow. Anyway, let me know what you think.

I don't want to be too critical, because it is a very nice looking pipe, but...
1. The shank is fine, I think.
2. It curves too sharp at the shank-bowl curve, maybe..for a horn, it could be more fluid there.
3. The bowl should be a bit larger and longer, I think
That's just my opinion, partly based on Poul Ilstead horns, like...

Sawdust, while I am new to making pipes I sold them for over a decade so you made a fantastic pipe, it would be welcome in my collection any day. I especially like the grain so keep up the great work. Plus the curve is pretty spot on for a horn in my opinion.

Thank you all for the complements! Poul Ilstead's work is absolutely beautiful. I think it will be quite a while before I could even approach that level of refinement.

Dude! That's your second pipe? That's awesome even for a 20th pipe! Nice work!

Okay, I quit. (J/K) So I take it this was not shaped from a kit. You're 1st and 2nd "attempts" you drilled yourself? Wow! God must be smiling down on you my friend. You must be living right. ........I need to go to confession. I wonder if they would take me? I doubt it.

Don't think this needs to be said but, good job!

That's a nice looking second pipe. The only suggestion I have is to work on the flow a bit. You have a very nice gradual curve from the rim to the shank and then the shank straightens out and then you have a slightly too sharp bend in the stem. A horn should flow gracefully from rim to bit. Yours is still a very good attempt.

WOW! Thank you for all your compliments. It’s a real encouragement.

@ hawky454 Yeah, I did the drilling, etc. My background is in making furniture. The thing is, though, it’s like learning to speak another language. There are some similarities, but it is totally different.

@ wdtiepen I can see that if I had given the shape more of an “s” curve it would have been much more graceful. Thanks!
