Making pipes for myself is fun!
Now that I am "retired," I will make an occassional pipe for myself. I was chatting with a few guys online today, and they wanted to see some pics of what I have been doing. This is my first "retired" pipe.
The shank is long giving the pipe an overall length of about 8". There is plenty of work still to do, mostly in refining the shape, but I think the idea is clear. I was inspired by all the pedestal sitters in Chicago and the sitter in the Eltang seven-day set shown in the recent P&T. I figure now that I am making pipes for myself I can more freely steal ideas.
One fun thing about this pipe is that in the entire carving process I have not come across a single pit, not even a speck. I don't think that has ever happened before. It has been a real pleasure. If I had a stamp representing a perfect piece of wood, this one would probably be my first to qualify (if something doesn't pop up last minute). I am probably jinx'ing myself by saying all of this, but, oh well, its not like there is a big sale on the line.

Honestly, I thought of you as I was posting it. Knowing that it matched your tastes I wanted to taunt you a little and hear your reaction.sagiter wrote:So you finally make a pipe that's perfect for me, just my style and it's not for sale. There's some irony here but it's lost on me right now.

Tyler, that is a beautiful pipe, I am happy for you that you have found a new pleasure in making things for yourself.
Here in the desert near Baghdad, I have started doing leatherwork for myself instead of demanding customers, and I too have found a new love for it. I am finding that I do better work when I have no schedule, no worries, and the DANG PHONE is not ringing because someone wants me to make them something else by the end of the week or some other rediculous timeframe.
Keep up the great work, even though, like the others, i was saving my pennies for a Tyler origional.
Happy Smoking:

also, anyone know of any tobacco shops in the Salman Pak area of Baghdad? Lotts of hookas around here, but no pipes
