First Two Tamps

So I had an oddly shaped chunk of briar so I decided to make some tamps. It also served as a practice run for the lathe - been a while since it has been set up and since I have been doing anything remotely pipe related. Decided to leave the plateau with a little chunk below it and then have the turn...

Lathe Use Advice

So, I got my 10x14 Jet and have only used it twice. The first time, I couldn't cut anything - sharpened tool with grinder and fine sharpening stone. Second time ended up bad because of chucking issues (I think) - the block flew off at the wall. I have never had any problem with the metal lathes I ha...

Sas coats all his bowls with a mixture of pure Canadian maple syrup and Caribou tears.

Actually I said Siemens. There's nothing funny about saying Seimens unless you're slightly dyslexic.

Re: Dean Smith and Grace Lathes For Sale

So, here's my question. If you're someone like Rad and you already make great pipes on a little 9x20, will a lathe that size really give you any great advantage? Will it make you a better pipe maker, or is it a bragging rights type of thing? It won't make you a better pipe maker, but it will make y...

Hand Cut Stems with Lathe

I have read/looked through the hand cut stems without a lathe photo essay, but I am kind of confused at how different it is from using a lathe. Am I wrong in thinking the shaping is more or less the same, but drilling is made alot easier with a lathe? Unless the stem is completely round the whole wa...

All-in-One Lathe?

So, now that I have my lathe, it seems that you can basically do everything with a lathe and some hand tools: Drilling with Jacob's chuck in tailstock Top part of bowl and shank shaping Jacob's chuck arbor and sanding wheel for the rest of the shaping/sanding Stem drilling (except slot) with Jacob's...

Re: blasting

What unit did you get? I just got the e100 cyclone. I couldn't justify anything larger with my brain, my ego on the other hand saw a trinco that was beautiful. I left the trinco alone for now. And yes Kurt, the sand in my kid's sandbox is safe, it would be a shame to blast a pipe with sand desicrat...

Re: #10 - Never Again...

Thanks for the critique David. I think part of the problem is the internet creates a barrier that does not allow tone, inflection, and facial expression/emotion to be related to the opposite party.

All is well. Sent you a PM.

Re: #10 - Never Again...

Yes I am being blunt. You may not like what you are being told but I buy and sell pipes for a living (average 20 per week), you have sold a couple of pipes. Your pipes have shown little or no improvement despite very specific feedback from several members on the problems, if you want every pipe you...

Re: #10 - Never Again...

Thanks for the comments Phillip and Yeti. For reference he said he wanted something like this, but not exactly: http://www.purisme.com/ (go to 'Men', then the pipe on the bottom row). I know my work is not up to professional standards by any means, but I feel I have improved from my first and learne...

Re: #10 - Never Again...

Cory, What people are trying to hint at is that your pipes are nowhere near ready for sale, your shaping and finishing is still poor and you need a lot of practice in general pipemaking. David. I didn't really get that from anyone else other than you, but thanks for taking the time to make a helpfu...
