Nick,

Great shape, looks very good to me. I also am not impressed with the ferule material. I can not, however, offer any better material. Maybe if you would have put a transition ring between the shank and ferule, but I don't know.I do like the stem.

Overall, great job!

George, very nice work. I really really loved the last three. The shapes were very appealing. Nice job.

For your question about the slot. I use the dremel cutter and then needle files. I have been wanting to get the set of broaches from Woodcraft for opening up the slot. They look very interesting.

Thanks guys for all of your compliments. I was able to make it to the fair today and got to see the pipe on display. Very cool feeling. I actually had an admirer looking at it when I was there. Turns out he is an ocassional pipe smoker who is thinking about trying his hand at a pipe kit. I gave him ...

Hey Alex,

Yeah, I guess if the smoker has too big a schnoz he will just have to hang it out of the side of his mouth.

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Thanks for the compliments guys! Kurt I totally agree, I do not like the stem at all. I cut the flippin' thing too short and just went ahead an finished it because I was under a time constraint to get it turned in for the fair. I think I might consider re-doing it before sending it on to my brother-...

Nick,

No seriously, if you saw some of the people at the SC State Fair, you would understand that those little tid bits of info would be WAY over their heads.

WOO HOO I WON

I just found out that a pipe I entered into the SC State Fair won 1st place in the hand carved wood working section. I don't have pics of it here at work, but I will post a couple pics of it tonight. Also, my wife won first place in two divisions for cake decorating. She is awesome, here is her site...

Joel, I did kind of the same thing with the last pipe I did. I haven't posted pictures of the completed pipe yet. When I was cutting the stem for the pipe I got to a point where a section on top of the stem looked very shiny. The more I sanded the bigger the shiny area got...turns out the shiny area...

Hello Michael, The rounding that I was referring too was at the stem/shank junction. It looks a little like the stem is rounding down as it meets the shank. Which makes the junction there not be quite as clean, it breaks up that line. This rounding usually happens when you buff the stem when it is d...

Hello Flix, I really like the shape of the first pipe, but seems to my eye that either the outside diameter of the bowl needs to be greater or the width of the shank needs to be smaller. With respect to this I am talking about the picture of the top view of the pipe. I also think the 'heel', so to s...

Hey Tyler,

Yeah, I am not convinced that the compound is the answer either. I think I am just grasping at straws. I think my problem realy lies in the buffs. What kind of buffs did you get the improved results with?

Red Tripoli

Anybody buffing their stummels with red tripoli? Currently I only buff my stems with it, but I am wondering if I should start buffing the stummel too. I just can't get the level of shine that I want from the stummel. So my thought was that if I buffed the stummel the way I buff the stem, that I migh...
