I'm embarrassed for them.

On a more positive note, I'm glad to see Mike Messer has secured a post in Dunhill's pricing department!

Re: billiard and brass

Nice pipe. Your button is too short. The top of your stem should not be concave. The sides of your stem as seen from above should be perfectly parallel.

Do you have a smart phone? Just take pics with that.

Re: What makes a high grade pipe: Top five things.

1. call it a high grade 2. price it high 3. tell people they can get high smoking it 4. put it up high on a pedestal for photos 5. stamp it with a high grade stamp You're obviously joking, but there is a grain of truth there. In response to some other posts, I think including engineering in this li...

Mission Accomplished, Tyler!

Interesting thread, and I agree that I don't make pipes with the repairman in mind. I do think it's valuable to hear what issues a repairman constantly runs into. That may or may not impact the way I make pipes though.

Re: Attempted Dunhill Prince sandblasted sibling.

Nice pipe. The only thing that really catches my eye is the bowl profile from behind. Dunhill aside, I would prefer to see it more rounded. I agree with the above comments: your stem is nicer than the original. The back of your bowl could use a tad more wood on it, but it's easy to over blast.

Re: symetric something

If you kept the top and bottom of the shank parallel that angle of the shank face wouldn't be quite as visible. It would also bring the stem into the middle of the shank. Your observation is correct though: the stem comes in too low. While it could use some tweaking, I do think the stem work is cris...

Re: WANTED: Extra Long Taper Drill Bit

To be honest, I find most taper bits to be oddly shaped; the taper comes in too abruptly. They will work fine, but it's really easy and inexpensive to make your own on the lathe. Just slap a bit in on reverse and sand it down to the profile you like.

Man! I've missed you guys. As I've stated in several posts, it is beyond puzzling to me why anyone would have a strong opinion on this. I think that Mike's comment below is about the strongest statement one can make on the subject: Personally I prefer pipes that have no chamber coating. I do not hav...

Re: First submission for your consideration

It's tough to offer critique on early pipes simply because you're learning every single facet of pipe making. It would require a lengthy write-up to critique any first time maker. That being said, I would focus on making your lines consistent from start to finish (that would rectify the stem issue)....

Re: Paul Argendorf Needs Our Help!!!!

I'm stuck in Phoenix, and I can't get out!! I need roughly $300K to move back to Colorado, but I really don't feel like raising the funds myself: too much work. Chris, another 150K in sterling would go a looong way... I'll start a gofundme campaign and post the link later. Thanks! P.S. I'd be happy ...
