Rhodie...

Post by JMG »

The pics don't really show the color very well at all. The pipe has more of a green/yellow/brown'ish thing going on. I was wearing a camo shirt today-it's fall-and so the hunting inspiration came out. Anywho, this was a giant pain in the butt to shape with hand files. Looking forward to having a lathe to shape stuff like this with soon. I took some time with this stem, trying to V out the bit end. I think it came out pretty good...at least better than my previous attempts. It's not perfect by any means, and I would really appreciate your critiques. Pick it apart.

How did you shape the part I have highlighted (whatever it's called)? By Hand? I've thought of trying it but assumed it would be too difficult to get it right at my skill level.

Very roughly shaped (stressing "roughly") with a drum sander bit on my dremel. Then, and this gets really high tech so you may need to read over this a few times...I wrapped sandpaper around something that had the diameter I needed and just started going at it, :D

The ring on the stem looks really nice as does the rest of the stem with the exception of a bulge on the underside at the bit. The symmetry of the bowl is wobbly but, considering the tools you had at your disposal, you did a good job. I really like the line you have on the bottom of the pipe.

Stink. I didn't even notice that bulge until you mentioned it, now it's all I see. Blerg!

A beautiful shape and"high skill/tech" to develop it. Great work!

Looks great, been wanting to do a similar shape for a while myself but have been intimidated but the thought of doing it with no lathe. May have to take a whack at it now.

Stem looks great , especially for being all hand done.
