Hello again to everyone here at PMF...

I just ordered some shellac flakes and decided to simply go with dewaxed platina so as not to impart any tinting to my stain color. At least for now since I am an absolute novice. This is supposed to be the clearest shellac according to the site I ordered from. However, there is super blonde, blonde, orange, garnet, kusmi amber, saram, and light pure (similar to garnet, but with an apricot shade).

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if anyone had any comparison pictures of pipes you have finished using different color shellac to enhance your stain colors. Or do you guys go with a very clear shellac like the platina?

I go with the most clear shellac I can get so either super blonde or better if you can find it. Shellac.net is a great source. The only time I notice any color added by shellac is on unstained/natural briar. It does lend a slight yellow/orange tint. Here's an example of the color. I'm using super blonde flakes.

Super Blonde or Blonde just puts a very slight darker shade on the existing color. I am curious about the platina. I may try it out.

I'm sure you guys all have your shellac sources, but for those interested on where I picked up the Platina shellac, I went with shellacshack.com.

Just remember, dye can get you darker, but that shellac color will lock you in. That's why most of us use very light flakes.

Hey Andrew,

I agree that the color control is mainly in your stain job, but I was wondering if any of you guys also use the shade of the shellac to bring out more tones in that stain color. In my mind I was thinking that it might make the colors feel warmer depending on the type of shellac used.

So for instance, if anyone had an oxblood color sealed with an orange shellac or garnet shellac. Or any other color/ shellac combination.
