nosewarmer billiard

Post by Joe Hinkle Pipes »

I just finished this pipe today. There are a few more ready for final buff. I noticed some scratches from transporting in the stem I will have to go back and sand out, but otherwise its done. let me know what you guys think. Nate mentioned a few things to correct. The shaping looks off in the last pic, but in reality it is pretty symmetrical.

I wish there was a clearer shot of the slot. Overall I think it looks pretty good. Was the rim to bad to leave smooth? I think that would have been a nice touch.

Looks pretty good. Something is off with the proportions. I think it's a bit bowl-heavy. A chubbier shank or narrower bowl would help.

What material did you use for the inlay?

Thanks jesse. I'm trying to get the camera to pick up the slot, but it always wants to focus on the bowl instead. The rim was clean. I just didn't think to leave it smooth.

Jeremiah. The shank is almost 3/4" if I remember correctly. There is a pretty strong taper that didn't quite show to get the button to a comfortable width. I'm not sure about the inlay material. It wasn't labeled. There is a strange iridescence to it similar to mahogany. Anyone else know?

The inlay looks like maybe curly maple or some fairly common hardwood. You could spruce it up with boxwood or some other wood that has a tight grain. Spalted tamarind looks similar, but has a cool random pattern to the grain.

If your shank is at 3/4", you've still got the option of narrowing out the bowl a bit. Otherwise, you can take the sides of the stem in at the saddle and still get a comfortable stem when it gets too chubby for a taper.

inlay looks like oak. the pipe is nice joe. i think a longer stem would have worked out better. something a bit more weighty. i like the blast. good bowl shape. i like it man

Thanks evan! I looked at the species offered by the supplier and it looks like teak. I still have the host chunk at home, I will verify. I adjusted the brightness of the photos. The inlay is much darker and slightly iridescent in person.

Awesome pipe, and nice shaping on the bowl and tapering of the shank through the saddle.

Could the proportions be more ideal? Yes, but it also is kind of cool to go off the grid sometimes and have a substantial dis-proportion.

Thanks Premal. The stem probably looks familiar to you as well. ;)

Agree re the proportions, something is off. But it's no biggie, all in all a nice pipe!

Thanks charl. I made so many billiard type shapes with the right proportions that I have been messing around with the last few just for my own entertainment. The bowl height was supposed to match the shank + inlay length. At proper proportions the stem would have felt too long to me, so I just went with what felt "right". Like premal said, its fun to mess with proportions occasionally.
