vise question

Post by JordanSharpes »

I have seen on these boards talk of a "self-centering" drill press vise and followed what links were provided. It seems though that everywhere that used to sell them stopped. I have a metal lathe, but it is small (6"), so I think I am going to attempt drilling on my drill press for now. Any thoughts on a cross-slide vise? They seem workable, but I want something that can reliably set me on center. Any help will be appreciated.

I was thinking that a cross slide vise would work well also, but found a self centering vise and went with that. Try searching on the Harbor Freight website. They are the only place that I knew of that sold a self centering vise, and if you were following my link, it was an old link, and may not be active any longer. I think I got the three inch vise, and once you get it set up, it works very well.

FWIW, you can use a standard drill press vise, but you will have to set it up for each block. Takes more time, but it can be used effectively.

Does anyone out there have a lint to a site where one can purchase a "self-centering" drill press vise? Or at least have a pic of one? I am not sure what one is and I don't know what they call it in Swedish. :?

I think I would get one for $125 but $289 is a little too steep. I've looked and looked but haven't found any others.

mine was around $40 as well (from harbor freight). I got the three inch vise. You might look and see what harbor freight has. Haven't looked at their site for a while, so I am not sure if they still carry it.

I looked when this thread started.

They don't seem to carry it any more.

I went ahead and purchased the cross-slide 4" vise from harbor freight, it was $40 and though I have not used it yet. I think it will do the job.

I bought one for $14.95 from Harbor Freight. It was on back order for 6 months and when if finally arrived I had forgotten about it and because I had moved on to a lathe at that point I sent it right back! I guess I should have hung onto it and sold it here! :)
