Lundell poker, first hand made stem

Post by Lundell »

Here's a poker I've been working on. I'm still playing around a bit, getting to know my Dremel and the briar. This is my first attempt at making my own stem. Well almost anyways. I didn't turn the tenon, but other than that it's all me!
So what do you think?

Make the saddle mimic the smooth part on the shank i.e., bring the saddle in further.

I understand... I think. You mean the flat part of the stem should be longer while the round part stays the same length, thereby shortening the radius of the saddle... right? (Sorry, I'm not only new to this, I'm also swedish!)

I like the basket weave concept, the overall shaping is good also. Appears to be well balanced. I think the comment about the saddle relates to the radius cut of the reduction from round to flat. That being said, I actually like the cut the way it is.
Is that an ebonite or acrylic stem?
What did you coat the tobacco chamber with?

Yes. The saddle should be closer to the shank and the flat part of the stem should be longer. You may also try widening out your slot a bit more towards the sides. That will make the smoke less concentrated in one area. Keep up the good work!

He means the round part of your stem is too long. You can experiment with different shoulder radii until you find one you like. Most people tend to like a crisper radius than what you have.

Thanks guys! Notes taken!
The stem is acrylic, because I'm cheap and lack some faith in my own abilities, I went for acrylic instead of ebonite before I knew if I could make my own stem or not. I regret that now.
The coating is something called "Smoking Paste" I ordered from Germany. I haven't investigated what the actual ingredients of it is...

ingredients are important, they may hurt you.Good ebonite has a smell when being worked like a cheap W…. Hopefully you'll love it as most of us do.

The diameter does not want to increase as you go from the shank at the bowl junction out into the stem. Add what's been mentioned about the length of the round part of the shank and, arguably, taper out to a wider bit with a wider slot.

I found out from the supplier what the Smoking Paste consists of. It's coal, ceramic powder and water glass...
