running pipe update

so I'll have to finish sand and wax the slab, so it's ready for everyones stamp. Is a natural finish OK, or will it clash with the color of the pipes? I'll go ahead and put my stamp on the slab.

I'm assuming that the pipes will not have everyones logos, just the stand will. Should we entertain the idea of laser engraving something on the pipes? or leave them bare?

I was too busy to get the slab finished today, but here's a pic of the 2 optional ones, which do you think is better? The bold blue lines are 2" apart.

I'll sand and wax, leaving natural color to darken with age, if that works for everyone.

I'd recommend the smaller one, so it will fit easy into a box. For me shipping to Canada, should I go first class or priority mail? Priority mail would be $23.50.

People who mentioned if they can get in on this, but lack the experience to feel confident with the outcome, maybe we could get some people together to help donate shipping costs that all of us will occur. Those of us donating supplies or time would appreciate the help with shipping costs. Whats everyones thoughts?

I have never been more excited to be making stems. I'm not sure I want to touch those blocks

So I have like a hundred PMs from Steve and Bob. "Didja gettit didja gettit didja gettit?"

Inside.... it's full of treats!




Couple of sweetie-pie grade blocks fo sho. I pretty much went with Steve's locating on the blocks. I figured on a little orientation cutting but it really wasn't needed, both are cut real straight.

I moved the top up on the rhodie/bulldog and cut it as wide as I could. Steve's little joke here is to draw a disc that's longer than the width of the block.




Cutting a bulldog type pipe, you start high and work until you find good looking grain. It didn't take long in this case. The top of the pipe really came out nice and I'll leave the rest up to the rest of the crew. There's a subtle single ring on there. Lots of room for shaping fun yet, and the decision of round vs diamond shank etc may be best done once more briar is exposed.



And the billiard came out really sweet too, nice grain and good placement by Steve. The middle of the block was pretty much the vertical axis on the briar.




So, that's it for me, a few hours of fun and now someone else gets to clean up my mess.

I'm including a small book, a journal for the various pipemakers to put a few thoughts in, maybe sell it with the pipes.
