Installing Stem?
Re: Installing Stem?
The best advice at this point is to do 3 things. Go to your local pipe shop and look around to see the different styles of pipes, look at how they are constructed, and how everything fits together. Secondly, start looking at each section of the forum and read all the posts from the beginning, not just the recent stuff. There is so much information to be found on this site and a lot of good advice. I think you got the initial response to your question because lately, and I could be mistaken, but there seems to be a good number of new folks on the site who don't look over the whole forum before asking questions. Questions are good, just check out the whole site first. You will be surprised what you are able to learn.

and the 4th. buy a pipe at said shop and smoke it. especially while making your next pipe. I dont know if i could trust a pipe maker that doesnt smoke a pipe. its like being a straightedge brewmaster.

You will enjoy the combination of carving and smoking pipes (not necessarily at the same time).lancefisher51 wrote:Lol you checked my facebook? All the cuts were from whittling... I guess I should start over an maybe explain a little bout myself. I'm a United States Marine Corps veteran. Honorable discharge in 2012. To help cope woth my ptsd I decided to pick up a hobby. That hobby being woodworking consodering I loved to create things out of wood as a kid. One thing lead to another. One cut lead to another cut an now I'm almost addicted to pipe making. Its a great hobby. Has caught a huge interest from me looking forward to creating more pipes an seeing how they come out.

Pipe smoking is a wonderful way to let your mind unwind. Carving pipes is fun, addictive and, for me, got me into all sorts of woodworking. I started carving as a way to reduce my pipe purchases, now I do it for the absolute fun. Unfortunately I still buy pipes and so all I did was increase my costs, not reduce them! Enjoy, experience!

Lance, these boys like to rowdy from time to time. No harm intended. As stated we have had a huge influx of new carvers hit the board over the past few months. Read everything you can. Not only for what you will learn, but also to get the vibe and learn the personalities that live in this slice of heaven (going for the longest run-on sentence......how did I do??)

It is like sex.lancefisher51 wrote:New to the entire pipe making community. Have completely 2 pipes thus far. First was of pine just to attempt. My second was done out of briar. Both completely by hand. However now that I'm really interested in this skill I'm curious about installing a stem. Is it pressed in with drill press? Or wood glued or what? If some on could help with a little bit of info would be Mich appreciated.
