Payment at shows

If I could get a free chip and pin like Scottie then I would have one just because why not? If someone came up to me at a show and wanted to pay by card then I could handle it. So far I have not needed it and the outlay is just too much for a "maybe one day" kind of thing, I'll see how things go at this years BPSC, if I lose a pipe sale because of it then maybe I will invest. That being said though a friend and tobacconist will be there and I bet he will have a card machine, in exchange for covering his fee and a pint I bet he would handle it for me, in fact I'm going to send him an email now

Anyone with a smart phone, which is to say, everyone everywhere, can log in to paypal, make a payment to me, which I can verify by logging into my own paypal account. That's all it takes.

But, if you run across someone who has no cash or a PayPal account (rare?) but a diamond encrusted credit card you're gonna need a reader (or grab his diamond encrusted card and run like hell).

This year's Kansas City show is being held at the Argosy Casino so I would tend to think that will not be an issue for them.

Only someone who had never been to a show before---and had no PipeWorld friends to let him know what to expect---would do that. I'm sure there have been a handful of such people over the years, but hardly enough to worry about. Chris's approach is the way to go for 95%+ of the pipemakers on this forum, I think.

I used to have a commercial cc account through a bank (which are tough to get, but considered more credit-worthy and credible in the eyes of the business world), and it never got me enough extra "impulse buy" business to cover the cost and hassle. Wish I'd never bothered. I'd have lower blood pressure today and be $5K richer.

I use the paypal card reader and paypal app on my Iphone, and I absolutely love it, it's free to get the reader in the US, and fees aren't that bad. I run 99% of my transactions through paypal, so it meshes in with my program pretty good. It's quick and easy, even in the manual mode. It sends an email receipt too if you want it to. If privacy is a concern, you can hand your phone to the customer and have them enter their own card number, it turns to a dot a split second after you type the number, so no one sees the number. If they are paying from their paypal account (which I have not done), I would imagine they would have to use their phone and log in to send. I've payed people at shows through my own phone using the normal paypal app, not needing the "paypal here" app, the seller checks his phone to see the payment come through and you're good.
