Need some imput on pipe #3
I am in the process of finalizing the shape. My goal is a billiard. I am interested in getting some feedback on making this better.
The bowl needs some work still as it has a few nicks in the rim. Also the button is way too big.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Shank is pinching towards the bowl, one thing I immediately noticed.
Haven't had a good look, but I'm sure other guys will reply as well.

Re: Need some imput on pipe #3
That shank is unacceptable. See how it pinches in behind the bowl ?
Ideally, you would put a pin gauge in the mortise, and rechuck the pipe and turn the shank down a MM or 2.
If you don't have a pin gauge set, rechuck the round part of your stem. You might have to chuck it up a few times until it spins straight.
Turn down the stem a MM or 2, then sand the shank to match the stem. If the stem is a good tight fit, you might even put the pipe back on the stem and sand down the shank while it spins. Be careful if you do that.
The bowl itself isn't bad, but I feel like the top of the pipe needs to come in if you want a billiard.

I see what you guys are talking about. I should be able to rechuck it as I have a set extraction pins (for disassembling pens) that may fit and work as a pin gauge. I'll work on it this afternoon and repost some pictures.
Thank you guys for the input.

Don't take the shank down too thin, just enough to balance it out and keep those lines straight, or slightly tapered (getting very slightly larger towards the bowl).
Go ahead and sand the shank while its chucked up too.
Then rechuck the stem and turn it down to match the shank. Might as well do a little sanding while the stem is chucked up too. Then hand sand to match them.

Re: Need some imput on pipe #3
tried to post this last night. couldnt get the website to cooperate. the profile shot shows the shank is about 1/4" too long compared to the bowl height. stem length looks right if shank length is shortened. the front shot of the bowl shows the top of the bowl needs to taper more towards the rim. also the shank and stem dont have an even taper. it tapers a bit, gets bigger, and tapers again. start with these and you will have a pretty nice billiard shape.

Re: Need some imput on pipe #3
So, I have made some progress on the pipe - thanks in part to a rare snow day in Georgia. My stem is mostly done and I now see several things I need to fix thanks to bright lights and photos. I humbly submit noobish work for your guidance.
I see several scratches that have come out since staining. I have attempted to do a contrast stain and now I'm curious as to the process for removing the scratches. I know that I need to sand it down in the least. Should I sand all the way down to bare briar in and start over with the black and build back up the layers?
Thank you guys for taking the time to comment and help an addict out.

Re: Need some imput on pipe #3
If you are using the standard leather dye that most people use I would stay away from black. try russet or another dark brown. The black tends to turn blue/green when you layer another color over the top. Also when you use black you have to be very diligent when sanding. Too much sanding leaves washed out patches on the briar. Not enough leaves a very dark muddy stain. much better to use a dark brown in my opinion.

You need to lose a lot of weight on that stem. Your taper should start at the shank/stem junction and go straight to the button.

You have rounding at the stem/shank junction. Always, always sand, buff and polish (on smooth pipes) with the stem in the pipe!

Your stummel is quite nice for a third pipe. Good job.
Your stem is still a work in progress. As in, the perfect stem is "still inside" that one.
Here's a pic of a tapered stem that has no excess material on it (or has been over-cut anywhere). It's what you should shoot for.

Looks good. Still looks a little thick behind the button, but you really need to put calipers to it to be sure. .15" is a good number to shoot for.
The angle of the taper is good, but try to get the waviness out of it and make it a smooth line all the way down the length of the taper.

Much better again!
FYI, Thanks for actually doing what the critiques suggest. As you can see it is paying off. Keep this up and you'll be turning out great pipes in no time!

Here is the stem after its nip and tuck.
The tilt to the left is a result of the make-shift handle I use for polishing and sanding. It tilts away from me.

The final product. I have to say that I have learned a ton on this pipe and the advice that was given was great.
Thank you!

Mucher gooder! Far better stem work than usual for a third attempt.
You seem to be one of those guys whose hands can make what your eyes see. You have a bright future at this carving thing, I think.
As Rad would say, "Now go make another!"
