Hi and other things.
Hi, first post in here, I don't make pipes, I aim to try after much studying, so I thought instead of just lurking in the shadows the least I could do was make some kind of post. First off, thanks to Kurt for letting me in, much appreciated my friend.
Anyway, I'm based in the UK, and found pipes around around a month ago. It was purely a means of getting tobacco from the outside in and reminded me of long passed uncles & neighbors. I bought a cheap Chinese pipe, I know, and a pack of OTC St Bruno as a tester. the pipe was garbage, the tobacco OK, but something clicked. A week later I got hold of a Parker bent Rhodesian in black rustic, a bag of loose black cherry & a Borkum Riff bourbon mix and I was sold. Then it happened, as it does, I started looking into the art & history behind it. Found great inspiration from Kurt & Tyler and also people like Roger Wallenstein, Bjørn Thurmann, Marcus Mayer and many others. this is an art form that I would eventually like to be part of.
Couple of pictures attached of other things I do, although at the minute not as much as I would like to. I built all my machines from scratch using traditional methods, mainly files, saws, hammers, a drill and a blow torch. wrapped the coils my self and did all the finishing. Just a little about me and thanks for having me.

So what are we looking at? I'm curious.
My first briar pipe was a Parker Bulldog, BTW.

Yea, traditional tattoo machines. I like the Bulldog / Rhodesian bowl shape. Just feels right to me. I'm getting a few more before I venture to other styles.

To call ones mother a whore is a lesser crime than to call a tattoo machine a "gun" ~Percy Waters~Alden wrote:Tattoo Gun ?
Although I am not that particular what people call them

Thanks Big Casino. Nice quote, true though. I proposed to my girlfriend holding an original Waters machine.

Honestly, with as much "ink" as I have, you'd think I'd know that.Alden wrote:Tattoo Gun ?

Ha, no. I'm both too indecisive and too much of a sissy for tattoos. I might do the soles of my feet one day though...BigCasino wrote:e Markle wrote:Honestly, with as much "ink" as I have, you'd think I'd know that.Alden wrote:Tattoo Gun ?

A lot of people call them guns, thats why It doesn't bother me, I do know some artists/machine builders who it does upset, but I just think that as a natural progression in any art, that once an artist feels as tho they have reached a certain level, they become elitists and a little bit snobby.... meh

You've just described that elitist, Tyler, perfectly.BigCasino wrote: ...but I just think that as a natural progression in any art, that once an artist feels as tho they have reached a certain level, they become elitists and a little bit snobby.... meh

Cant agree more, a lot have fell onto the bandwagon that was created by Miami ink etc and consider themselves of Rockstar status. Its like the hygiene thing, its necessary but out of control. OK a lot of people working from home are guilty, but I've been in less hygienic studios. I remember my first tattoos, a guy in Sheffield called Blind Eddie, yea, No gloves, cigarette hanging outa his mouth and coffee on the side. Another bloke I had work done from did me in his overalls after working on his bike and had about a dozen empty cans of lager on the table and a sleeping dog. To me that's fine, I doubt Sailor Jerry or Jonesy or Waters ever scrubbed up. I go with the machine thing out of respect for a few people who showed me the ropes and "Gun" is something that they don't agree with so I go with that.BigCasino wrote:A lot of people call them guns, thats why It doesn't bother me, I do know some artists/machine builders who it does upset, but I just think that as a natural progression in any art, that once an artist feels as tho they have reached a certain level, they become elitists and a little bit snobby.... meh

Actually Sailor Jerry, had a lot to do with hygiene ,he had something to do with the medical field in the navy and learned about sterilization and was the first to utilize autoclaves and such in the tattoo industry, as well as became a skipper later and was in charge of tours around the hawaiian islandsChesterton wrote:Cant agree more, a lot have fell onto the bandwagon that was created by Miami ink etc and consider themselves of Rockstar status. Hey Chesterton, from another UK tattooed piper.
Where in the UK are you? If you're anywhere near Nottingham you should check out our pipe club. http://www.nottinghamtobacco.co.uk/about/ There's a more up to date Facebook page too.
Good smokes, good beer, good company, and i learnt a ton there when i was new to pipes.

Oakbear, I'm from near Rotherham, I go to Nottingham occasionally for gigs. Old Kings Heads one I use. I'll see how it falls when I'm down there next.
