Burl Maple

I have a list that I got from somewhere, I don't know where, of woods other than briar that are good for making pipes. They are leadwood, cherry, olive, birch, pear and maple.

I was looking around on the internet at the different woods and came across some burl maple. To me this is some of the most beautiful wood I have seen. I was just wondering if anyone has ever used this for pipes ?

If the burl maple has black streaks running through it, do not use it to make a pipe. the black streaks are, i think, part of spalted maple, which i think is part of the burl. but i could be wrong there. but i have a friend here that turns bowls out of spalted maple and the black streaks are toxic and may hurt or kill you he said.
