McMaster Carr WTF?

Got this peach in this morning's email.

"Hi Todd,



Due to the complexity of U.S. export regulations, McMaster-Carr accepts international orders only from our established customers. This decision also applies to orders shipping within the United States, because it is based on the final destination of the items. We cannot accept this order or future orders."

I responded none too politely, I suppose, but what the fuck is he talking about? I order all kinds of stuff out of the States with no issues.

I'm just pissy cuz it comes on the heels of having to close my Lowes Business Account because they wouldn't change my mailing address to reflect, well... my mailing address. It got silly. And what's awesome is they can't send me a statement saying the account is closed because.... they don't know my mailing address.

weird... if you read their wiki page, it looks like they've had problems with violating export regulations before... but that was in 2003, and not dealing with Canada.

This is a recurring subject on the Practical Machinist forum. (those guys use McMaster-Carr al lot)

I always assumed it was because Canadisians are so hostile, aggressive, and warlike that everyone felt it was best to keep sharp objects & related out of their hands, but it turned out just to be lawyerly shit: Tangle-y legal reasons plus a giant dose of ass-covering.

They did this to me a couple of years ago, tried to place an order and they refused to ship outside continental N.America.
