PM's sit in your outbox until they are read, then they shift to the sent box. IOW, it sounds like its working fine.

You can delete the extra messages from the outbox.

And don't sweat the mistake too much. It's very confusing, especially if you are accustomed to the language of email clients that use the words outbox and sent differently.
