I need dust collection, I'm going to budget for it, and I need suggestions. What units do you guys use? What experiences have you had?

The large collector works fairly well and it fits the little bit of space I have.

When you say "fairly well" what does that mean?

It has more to do with the way I have it set up while I use my sanding disc than anything. It will suck the nails out of a 2x4 no problem at all. I just need to adjust a few things so I'm not losing dust into the air when I'm rough shaping. Again, not the machine....it's my setup. I got it on sale for $299 a while back at Woodcraft. It was the same price as the 1hp model.

I just ordered a complete setup with remote start for just over $300. I got everything fro grizzly. I love it. I no longer have ANY dust issues. Keeps the air and my lungs dust free. Just pm me if you want to see my order list or call me. My shop is in an unfinished basement, it was dust city before. The poor shopvac couldn't keep up.

Even the smallest proper dust collector will suck more than enough for the needs of a pipe making setup, for sure.

I used the shop vac for awhile until I got the shopsmith dust collector. I liked it a lot even though it's not that powerful... until one day it sucked up a bit of a cut off block I had not picked up - I guess it went inside and hit the fan blade and basically grenaded the fan. I'm sure I could order parts from shopsmith and fix it, but I am also sure that would cost more than I got it off Criagslist in the first place.

So back to craigslist I went and found a Jet DC-650 for something like $65 a pawn shop had posted on there. Works great for me! I imagine if I had a big shop with pipes between various machines distances apart I might need more - but for pipe making in part of an old one car garage I have no complaints.

Note to self- install a metal screen.

The dust collection units and hoods/scoops usually have a built in screen that will catch fan killing sized material. Dust collector impellers will be much larger than a shop vac sized impeller and less prone to damage by... um, chunks and stuff.
