matching holes in the shank and stem?
matching holes in the shank and stem?
Hello and thanks for all the help and advice available here.I have a small piece of briar and want to make a thin stem so I drilled that with a 9/64th tapered bit. Should the hole in the stummel also be drilled with 9/64th or should I use an 11/64th bit to insure a good draw? Thanks in advance for any and all advice. Norm
Re: matching holes in the shank and stem?
I would say you can do either. You can choose to go from larger at the bowl to smaller in the stem, or keep things the same size. Larger in the stem than in the shank airway could be problematic, but even then, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Mine are 4mm in the shank, 3mm in the stem.

Is that some kind of secret code, Chris??

Re: matching holes in the shank and stem?
I prefer to use the same diameter for the entire airway. I don't know much about physics so I try to keep the dynamics of the airway as consistent throughout to minimize the likelihood of condensation/moisture issues. Besides, it's not like it takes any extra effort. I do what makes the most sense to me. Whether it actually makes any difference, I couldn't say with certainty.
Re: matching holes in the shank and stem?
Thanks for the advice, I went with the same size holes thinking if I needed to I could enlarge the hole in the shank.

They make scotch tape. Not the drinking one.

5/32 in the briar, 9/64 in the stem. I may use other sizes if the pipe is unusually small or large.notow1 wrote:Hello and thanks for all the help and advice available here.I have a small piece of briar and want to make a thin stem so I drilled that with a 9/64th tapered bit.
