TMJ Pipemaker Tooling

Post by ToddJohnson »

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to give everyone an update. Spoon bit sets are currently in production--17, 18, 19, and 20mm in the exact same profile. I am also producing a two-jaw chuck in two sizes--one for those with larger lathes, and one for those with the 9x20 variety. All are guaranteed to work. I will have examples in Chicago, and everything I have will have been tested by me. If you guys want to give me a "show of hands" for who wants what, that's fine, but do not consider your response to this message as an "order." I will have examples of the chucks in Chicago, and I will probably have 10-20 sets of spoon bits there as well. Do I have prices? No, not really. The price is this: Cheaper-than-everything-else-that's-out-there-as-long-as-it-doesn't-cost-me-money dollars. Hopefully I will have more details within a week or so.

Be well,

TJ

I might be interested in a 2 jaw chuck. My independent version works well but I would like a self centering version at some point. Look forward to seeing what you have come up with.

That's all fine and dandy, Todd, but if we are not able to attend the Chicago show. Will there be some way for us to check things out as well? Will they be available for purchase online?

Oh, and absolutely great idea!

I'm also interested in the chuck and the bits. I look forward to checking them out!

Does the two jaw mount into an existing chuck (held by the jaws of that chuck) or does it mount directly to the spindle on the headstock?

"but rev, isn't smoking a sin?"

well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin

"but what would be smoking to excess?"

Why smoking two pipes at once of course

Because different lathes have different spindle sizes, and it's a pain to change out chucks anyway, the chuck will mount in your existing 3-jaw. Also, the spoon bits will not be available for purchase in individual sizes.

I'd be interested in a spoon bit set depending on price and I would have to see some pics of the jaws first, though I may just have a set made my a local machinist

Then put me down as interested in a set.

Okay folks, the spoon bit sets will each include one 18, 19, 20, and 21 mm. bit with primary and secondary relief so they have only three points of contact. This allows them to clear chips while still self tracking. They are profiled in such a way that they are suitable for drilling 90% of all shapes. If you do something really squat and need a more bull nosed profile, I can recommend Brad's bits for reaming the hole larger. These bits cut beautiful briar curls without the slightest amount of friction, and I've priced them at $375 for the set. I have paid for all of these out of pocket, and the first run is 20 sets. I will do future runs if the demand is there, but will probably take orders first. If you definitely want a set but will not be in Chicago, you can e-mail me and let me know. I will sell 10 sets by e-mail, and the rest will go to Chicago. The sets in Chicago will be first come first served. I will arrive on Wednesday.

The two-jaw chuck is also in production, but I have not had an opportunity to test it, so I will not have any for sale in Chicago, although I will be able to take orders there. It will have a shank that fits into your existing 3-jaw chuck, and the back of the 2-jaw will butt flush against the jaws of your 3-jaw. It comes in two sizes--one that fits the 9x20, and a larger one that will fit the 11x27, 12x36, or 14x40. I don't have a price on this one yet, but should know before Chicago. The company that is making the chuck and spoon bits is a supplier to Volkswagen, Audi, Ducati, Bentley, and Porsche.

Whether or not they will "technically" work, I'm going to say no, just because I think it's a bad idea to do this sort of work with such a tiny lathe. Your money would be better spend upgrading you lathe. If my goal were just to sell tooling, I could probably tell you "yes," but my real goal is to make it easier for you guys to make really good pipes. I think you can get a Grizzly 9x20 for under $1K, and that should be your minimum target in terms of size. I have a 7x14 that we use to batch delrin tenons, and it just feels like a tinker toy. I wouldn't feel good about selling you a tool that I thought was dangerous to use with your current set-up.

Guys, one set left for those who will not be in Chicago. For those who will, I arrive Wednesday, and I will sell five sets before the show, but I want to keep at least five sets on the table.
