Pipe Carving Contest --- June 2013
First off, my apologies for cross posting from the Shows section. The Gallery has about as much traffic as the rest of the site put together, though, and the Shows section is both pretty empty and rarely updated, so I figured the best way to make sure the word gets out is to put a mention here. (If the mods decide to delete this, no problem. I just thought the subject matter trumps the classification thing, since the contest is the only one of its kind & couldn't be more relevant to aspiring carvers.)
Here's a link with the full particulars:

I've been connected with the contest since its second year, so can (and will gladly) answer any questions you may have.

"but rev, isn't smoking a sin?"
well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin
"but what would be smoking to excess?"
Why smoking two pipes at once of course

They are accepted until the day before the actual judging. Keep in mind that means delivered by UPS, FedEx, Post Office, etc, though---something the sender can't control precisely--so I wouldn't try to cut it that close.

being a total beginner should I just send my bribe along with the pipe, or put it in a separate envelope to each judge?

I will be attending the gathering, send the envelopes to me with the bribes. I will "see" they are given to the correct people.the rev wrote:being a total beginner should I just send my bribe along with the pipe, or put it in a separate envelope to each judge?

I'm 99.99% sure you don't have to be present to win, but I'll double check with the RaffleMaster and get back to you.Vermont Freehand wrote:does one have to be present to win the raffle for the 7 day set, or can raffle tickets be purchased online?

I'm 99.99% sure that collaborations (officially credited ones, anyway) are not allowed, but I'll double check on that, too.

Yup, I guessed right. Here's the official word from the Man In Charge of the Contest:
-- I'm going to say no to collaboration entries. I like collaboration pipes, but this is not the right venue for them. This contest is about individual American pipe makers.
-- No, you do not have to be present to win the 7 day set. If you are not at the show, you will be contacted and we will make arrangements for you to get the set.

Steve (and anyone else who is interested), here is the link to the show website. Click the "Register" link and you can buy raffle tickets on the next page. No need to be at the show, just give 'em your money now ....Oh, you can buy tickets for the general raffle as well as the carving contest raffle.

Just a friendly bump in case there's people who would be interested but haven't seen this post. Looks like fun but I'm sure I'm not ready.
