drilling sketch
drilling sketch
I am about to start on my second pipe. Two major changes this time;
1. I won't use a pipe kit,
2. I have a drill press, a metal lathe, anything one could ask for
I attached a photo with my drilling sketch, it is going to be a L'Anatra poker copy
My question is, whats the proper order to proceed now?
do I need to cut off the excess wood on ferrule/shank before drilling filter chamber and draft hole or just?
I obviously will need to angles, one for the filter chamber and one for the draft hole. Do you guys see any problems with this sketch?
If I decide to use the lathe, do I have to square the bowl first, make it, say, 2.5 x 2.5 ? (outside of bowl will be 1.6 in)

Re: drilling sketch
Well, first of all, I'm wondering why you have oriented the outline on the block the way you have. Seems upside-down.
If this were my block of briar, I wouldn't make a poker out of it. It doesn't fit the grain.

Re: drilling sketch
I agree with Walt. Also why is your draft hole intersecting so high inside the mortise wall? Sometimes the design call for that but it should be avoided whenever possible. This design seems like you would have to use a very short tenon just to draw through the pipe.
Re: drilling sketch
Birba, I know it sounds like we're being douchbags... We're not trying to. We only want to help!
This is the second pipe you'll be making, and the frist was a pre-drilled kit? Ok, so you've never done a pipe engineering layout before?
Ok, hold tight. I'm going to make a nifty video and PM it to you. Be patient, it might take an hour or so!

post it to youtube walt. it will help many lost souls, like me!
Re: drilling sketch
isn't this the way to go if you want birds eye on the bottom of the bowl? this was my reason behind it
crap, now I see what you mean, the draft hole does not meet the end my tenon/filter.
and I don't see how I would be able to drill that..
what do you guys think how is it done in the original?

just saw the last posts..
you guys, I really appreciate that you take some time to explain it to newbies,
and Walt, that's awesome, looking forward to it!
Thanks

I made a video, just waiting for it to upload...birba wrote: what do you guys think how is it done in the original?

My best guess at the way the original pipe is drilled would look (not exactly, but...) something like this:
The silver work is a dead giveaway, hiding the fact that the hole drilled for the airway will cut out the bottom of the mortise at the shank face. I mentioned this phenomenon in my video. Best to avoid this for your first pipe!

Re: drilling sketch
Ok, here's the video for anyone interested... I was going to keep it private and send it only to Birba, but I guess I'll share it with all you folks!wisemanpipes wrote:post it to youtube walt. it will help many lost souls, like me!
BTW, I now officially have more private tutorial/critique videos on YouTube than public videos...

Re: drilling sketch
the information given was very helpful. nice vid walt. im sure it will help new pipe makers for years to come.
Re: drilling sketch
Wow. Walt, you are either extremely helpful or have way too much time on your hands. Thanks for all the tips, tricks, videos, photoshop demonstrations, Harlem Shake videos, ect. They help all of us newbs out a lot.
Birba, I hope my comment wasn't perceived as hostile. I've messed up a block the exact same way myself, so I was just trying to save you a headache.
Keep us posted on your progress!

Re: drilling sketch
I hope so! It was really only meant to be a starting point for someone who has never drilled a pipe before. If others can distill something useful from it, then that's even better!wisemanpipes wrote:the information given was very helpful. nice vid walt. im sure it will help new pipe makers for years to come.

dude, really nice. thanks a lot! somebody should make that a sticky
I will go with the straight plateau dublin.
birba (pronounced beer-Ba) was the name of a little dog when me and my girl were on vacation on a winery in Tuscany. It means something like scoundrel, rascal..
I already have a 3/4 drill bit for the tobacco chamber and checked out the necessary mortise size with a caliper today. It's going to be a filtered pipe with a delrin tenon.
I am going to post a new sketch tomorrow to get the "go" from you guys

Well, I must be extremely helpful then, because I certainly don't have a surplus of time!!!Ocelot55 wrote:Wow. Walt, you are either extremely helpful or have way too much time on your hands.
Exactly. Birba probably worked hard on the layout of that block, then the guys who've drilled a few pipes start shooting it down... It's easy to feel like you're being attacked in that situation, but we really are just trying to save you alot of trouble, and probably a wasted block of briar!Birba, I hope my comment wasn't perceived as hostile. I've messed up a block the exact same way myself, so I was just trying to save you a headache.

I'm glad to help, and yeah, I think a straight is the best way to go for now!birba wrote:dude, really nice. thanks a lot! somebody should make that a sticky

That explains alot! Thanks for the clarification!birba (pronounced beer-Ba) was the name of a little dog when me and my girl were on vacation on a winery in Tuscany. It means something like scoundrel, rascal..
Oh, well, that makes a huge difference if you're making a bent pipe. Not so much for a straight. The principle is still the same. It's going to be a filtered pipe...
I think I speak for all of us when I say we look forward to seeing it!I am going to post a new sketch tomorrow to get the "go" from you guys
