I like it.. really good execution.. but why didn't you rusticate it.. I'm assuming you don't have a sandblaster... neither do I.. hence rustification...I see no need in chasing the flaws in the wood, and there is neary zero grain but I wouldn't have left it smooth..

Nice work on the mouthpiece.. the v-slot could use some cleaning up so it isn't so pronounced (noticable) of a taper near the bit and if you have 2mm (or so) round file you can really clean it up so it looks as if the runs from the edge of the bit inwards.

I'd also shoot for a little thinner behind the bit, but that's a personal preference.. my goal is 3.4 right behind the bit....and gradually working out from there.. I drill 4mm to about 1/2 to 3/4 from the end.. 1/16 the remaineder of the way so I can get as close to 3 as I dare..3.4 is a comfort zone, and 3.8 and even more comfortable .. and then clean up the inside w/a jig severly modified jig saw blade and files..

of the two you posted this one I like the best.. good job overall..

I left the bit thick at the request of the guy I'm sending it to....he is a biter and likes his bits on the thick side ( This one ended up being right at .177" or 4.5mm. I usually shoot for .15" behind the button). I do still need to clean up the slot a bit more....I noticed that after I took the pictures.

I really don't care for rusticated pipes (personal preference here). I love the natural look of briar...pits and all. I know the grain isn't spectacular on this pipe, but think it will have some great character after it is smoked for a while. That's why I left it natural and didn't stain it. I sent my mom a pipe a while back that had a really light coat of stain on it. She sent me a picture last month and it looks amazing now (don't know where it is or else I would post it).

I by much appreciate that style in my own personal pipe, unstained, flaws and all. It makes it feel a little more personal. I like it! I would smoke it! It could be just me but it seems to be slightly thicker where the stem meets the shank.

You got me all curious....I had to go find my calipers. It has a slight (we're talking .05") taper from bowl to stem. It's just an obstical allusion brought about by my super duper photography skills.

The stem seems a little clunky, but over all I love this pipe's simplicity. Proportions looks great. Really nice little pipe.

Another option besides rustication would be a dark contrast stain. Your flaws aren't egregious and would blend in well.
