the lathe man cometh

Post by the rev »

So I have 2,200 dollars to go get a lathe and some tools. I am working through the lathe options right now. What it seems is that the jet and the grizzly lathe are the same exact lathe, made by the same manufacturer in Taiwan just painted different. If this is true then I was thinking of getting the 10 x 22 which would be 150 lbs heavier, and therefore more stable, of the grizzly. It comes with a three and four jaw chuck. What else will I need? I think I have about 800 for other tools.

I can buy used, and save money, get some tools with the deal, but I won't have a warranty.

Any thoughts or advice would be welcome

The Jet and Grizzly are NOT the same lathe. They are made in the same factory and look the same but they are made to different specs and have different parts, spindle threads, etc. The Jet is a much better lathe.

ok rad, I have a 12 x 32 inch jet that is lightly used, and has been in storage for ten years. It looks brand new. Way more lathe than I need, but I can get it for 1,500 what do you say to that?

Sounds like a great way to go!

It's gonna be heavy as hell, so be ready for that. Like heavy enough that you'll need 5 men to move it or heavy machinery. My 12 X 24 Jet took 5 grown men to move it into my apartment. Note: we rolled it in on the cart it came on because, together, we could not lift it.

No idea if that is a good price for that lathe or not but it certainly looks like it would work well as a pipe making lathe.

How did I become the standard here? Have you seen Askwith? He's like 6' 15" (yes, you read it right), and he's got to be pushing 380. He juices ya' know. He has to shave his forehead from the havoc that stuff has wrought on his system. Sad.

I have met you ernie, and I think I could lift you a few times. Caskwith I probably could not lift. I think I could lift Nate King 327 times

Ernie, we don't say "380" for Chris. We say "twenty seven stone". That's a good portion of a rugby pack.

PS about the lathe - the king might be great. But the JET will be great and you can get parts a lot easier I'm guessing.

No doubt you could lift me many times, while I may be 6'4 I don't weight much over 140 (10stone) as I am a skinny runt, nothing like that fat walrus Ernie. Actually that's an insult to walruses.

Ok I think the big jet is just too big for my situation, convince me otherwise I am open.

And say I buy the grizzly why am I going to regret it in a year? If the jet is a better lathe, what are the "symptoms" of that as I go forward.

I am very serious about pipe making, even if it is always just a hobby, I want to be a very good hobbyist. I want what I need to make great pipes.
