I have a good drill press, can I face with a forstner bit? Do I face my stock with the same?

well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin
"but what would be smoking to excess?"
Why smoking two pipes at once of course

Re: how do you face without a lathe
yeah, got all that, I am just wondering if the forstner bit is the best way to face the shank and stem, or if there are other more effective ways

I use a Forstner on my lathe and it does the job well. I don't see any reason it wouldn't work as well on a drill press. Keep in mind that all Forstners are not created equally and cheap ones tend not to provide as flat and clean a surface as the precision Forstners. That's my limited experience, anyway.
Re: how do you face without a lathe
I faced on my drill press using Freud precision forstners before I got a lathe. I don't know of a better way to do it on a drill press. Chuck up your block or stem material. Face with forstner. Drill mortise and airway.

Freud Forstners are really flat +1

Re: how do you face without a lathe
Yep, did it on a drill press until I got my lathe. Worked rather well actually.

Re: how do you face without a lathe
I think there are a few guys that use a drill press regularly.
