How long should I wait between staining and shelacing? I mean the stain is dry, but somthing tells me I should wait a day or two. Any insight would be appriciated.

Honestly, I don't know. I don't use shellac on my pipes (yet). However, I usually buff the pipe right after the stain drys (I even use my Zippo to help it along), and then the carnuba is applied right after that.

Minutes, if not seconds.

I go like this:

stain
white compound buff
shellac
white compound buff
wax buff
dry buff

The stain dry in a minute or less, and it is buffable then. I usually stain with several coats to darken the color before I move to the white buff.

Well, I don't have a wheel, so I just went for it. Two coats of stain, one redish-brown and one dark brown and then on with the shelac. The staining didn't turn out just as I'd hoped, but hey, for a first try, I'm pretty happy. As soon as I get batteries for my digital cam, I'll post a pic.
