So, I have a bit of a fetish for feedback. I like to hear other people's opinions on my work throughout the process. I feel like it really helps me learn faster. So, I'm beginning my seventh pipe(its a commission for someone).

They asked that I make it similar to my last pipe, but with more of an upwards flow. So I adjusted my previous design and am going for more of a stretched out horn. I'm looking to shorten my shank extension a LITTLE from what it was on my last pipe, and i'm also going to focus on creating a better stem to shank fit. As you can see in my drawing I have planned for a countersink into the shank extension.

Thoughts in general? I know you guys have opinions...

Nice shape. But it's going to be scaringly thin at the bottom ...

I agree; that's way too thin. Either change your shape to add some meat to the chamber walls, alter the profile of your chamber, or just go with a thinner bit altogether.

Yeah so the walls are a hair thin. I'll add some chub, it wouln't really hurt the overall flow of the design. Other thoughts?

Too much art and not enough pipe imho - what I mean is, if you build what you have drawn, you are going to have a bowl that is leaning forward at about 50 degrees. Anyone who tilts his head down is going to get a lapful of ash. So to me, the practical reality of this pipe is that while it might be aesthetically appealing, it's going to make a pretty crappy pipe as far as useability.


But I was wrong once before.

The stem looks at least an inch too long to me also.

As far as the tilt, I'll lessen it a bit- I'll also prove you wrong! I hope.

(When I make pipes I do detailed drawings beforehand- it helps me get my engineering smack on.

Hey draw till you puke - it's helpful as hell. By "art" I just meant that the pipe might be okay on paper, but as a pipe, I don't see it being okay - too much "arty" and not enough "pipey". But this is pretty subjective (until you tie your shoes and burn someone's carpet).

I'm looking at this design and what your saying and disagreeing. What I may do, is bevel in the edges of the bowl and polish them, so you actually pack it around 3/8" from the true top- because frankly the bowl is deep enough it can afford to lose a bit of height for aesthetic functionality. I'll decrease the angle a little bit, but I'm still keeping the flow I've got goin' in these sketches.

Have you ever noticed form tends to get in some nasty barfights with function?

It tries, but in my shop, function wins, which is why I make such traditional shapes most of the time. When form and function click, it's the coolest, but if I have to sacrifice one for the other, form is out the window and good riddance!

Can't wait to see the pipe at any rate.

I can't live without form personally, so I end up spending hours upon hours sketching to get the two bastards to shake hands. I'll be making this guy hopefully later this week pending on the U.S. Postal service.

How are you going to make it explode like that?
