Pistol Grip Design

A buddy of mine wants a pipe designed to match his colt 45 pistol. We've come up w/the design, but I've been racking my head for how to best creeat the diamond cut..

Exacto knife razor blade? sand paper wrapped around a thin piece if rectangular metal?

Of course the pattern will be drawn on first. a real challenge to not make it look 'kitsch' and a cheap basket pipe.. but at least he's working w/me on what is checkered and what is going to be smooth...

we also looked for one of the colt medallions as below.. so if anybody has one sitting around that isn't in use.... i might be interested

instead I'll be carving this on the bottom of the shank (w/out the horse)... or top I guess if you have the tobacco burny end pointed down..

Hi James,

guess you will have to use a knurling tool for that pattern - like these: http://brassandtool.com/Metal-Cutting.html

Best regards, Jens

I will say a "Hello" to the community next days, but let me answer to this I know...
They are called "checkering tools" or "chequering cutters" and here is an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxWkY9hyMhs
You can find them here: http://www.peterdyson.co.uk/
Also in USA, but I will search for the link.

Yep, checking file is what you want. I got mine from Otto Frei:

Also useful for adding thumb serrations to the spine of knives.

Have you any idea how quickly you can shape a pipe if you have serrated thumbs?

Strangely enough, no, I hadn't considered it.

Sas: I think KH means the jimping on the back of the blade to keep your thumb from slipping off the back of the blade.

jogilli: You making a 1911 pipe?

You should connect with Jonathan Drake (PipesByDesign). I doubt he's done that actual pattern, but he may have some insights for you.

Honest, no fake-jake!

"Lashing Grommets/Jimping - These terms refer to notches that are designed into the back lower part of the blade for better thumb control."
